Ich...GONE ? ? ? or is it ? ? ?

I have been battling the nightmare of Ich for a while now. To bring everyone up to speed, I pulled all fish from the DT and quarantined them for 8 weeks + 2 weeks supervision, leaving the DT fallow for the same amount of time. I dosed Cupramine and after the 10 weeks of qt with no signs of ich, placed the fish back into the DT.

Within 10 days of having the fish in the DT, I saw the first signs of ich on my Emperor Angel. Needless to say, I was livid, and not wanting to go through the taking down of the tank and QT again, decided to do one of two things: 1) Fight nature as much as I could OR 2) Let the Ich win, hence, running its course, wiping out all of my fish and forcing me to wait 10 more weeks on a fallow tank before adding new fish.

I decided to track all of this beginning the week of August 12, 2012. Below you will see a chart of this progress.

Starting the week of 8/12, I began a two-times-per-day feeding of Mysis enriched in Garlic and Seachem KanaPlex. All fish were eating at this point. Over the next three weeks, I monitored fish and found that a few were getting worse while others appeared to be doing better. My first loss came at week 9/2 with the Majestic. After losing the Majestic, I decided to fight the Ich with the next level of defense and added a UV sterilizer (added week 9/9 and also went back to one-time-per-day feedings). Within a week of adding this I noticed the biggest turnaround in fish health, but still lost two more fish the following weeks. [One thing to note is that both the Clown and the Emperor who I lost after the UV had been battling heavy Ich for some few weeks.] I assume (but not sure), their defense systems were just way too far gone even after the UV was added.
By week 9/30, I noticed no Ich on my fish (this included the gravel-dwelling gobies). Knowing that Ich hangs out in the gravel, I was shocked to see these fish showing no signs. As of today, week 11/11/12, I have now gone 7 WEEKS with NO SIGNS of ICH!

I can't say for sure what the science of this all is and I am not trying to prove that my methods worked versus other methods"¦

My MAIN QUESTION OUT OF THIS IS"¦If we know Ich has a life-cycle that can take up to 10 weeks before it is out of a system and that Ich needs a host at one point in the life-cycle to continue the repopulation/survival of the parasite, then if I go another three weeks with no signs of Ich on my fish, (or even if I go another eight weeks with no sign)"¦is Ich gone from my tank?

Hey there just read your post. Many of the treatments of ich only kill the free swimming stage of the parasite, which is the finial stage before it reinfects your fish. Copper / hypo will kill off this "free swimming" stage and keep your fish from being reinfected. Tank transfer method does this by letting the cyst fall off the fish then you transfer the fish so that it doesn't get re infected. Now by understanding this you will see what happened. I bet most likely that your fish were ich free when they were in the QT tank from you treating them, but what you need to understand is that the cyst that drops down into the rocks that are in your DT tank and like a ticking bomb. They could hatch in 3 days or they could hatch in 3 months. What happened is you reintroduced the fish back into your DT while some of those cysts were in the gravel and bam, then reinfected your fish. The reason some of your fish have stopped showing could be due to partial immunity from the first attack of the parasite. If I were you I would pull all of the fish out. Treat with whatever treatment you are comfortable with and let your display tank remain empty for 90 days to be sure. Some strains of this parasite can live for months in a fallow tank. Hope this clears things up. In some cases you are right 10 weeks is enough time to let the parasite die off, but this is not the case all the time.

Thanks Snake. I understand that and had been willing to start the tank over but now I am in Week 7 of absolutely no signs of ich on my fish, so I was wondering if in the next 3-5 weeks I still see no ich is it gone, since that would mean 10+ weeks in my tank with no signs of the swimming/hosting fish stage?

One thing you have to understand is that not seeing obvious external signs of ich (meaning white spots on the fish's body) means nothing. Ich LOVE to infest the gills since the tissue there is softer and there's more water flow there. Even though you don't see any white spots, the fish are still infected. Your system has simply reached an equilibrium where, with the help of the UV, the fish's health is strong enough to prevent heavy infestations.

I'm sorry but ich is still in your system with low infection rate.

Thanks. That is kind of what I feared. I wasnt sure or not if there was a visible stage or not. Let's hope the food and stable water parameters with the UV will allow me to just keep it under control.

As of today, 12/7, still absolutely no signs of ich and all fish appear healthy. At this point I am going to start the process of adding in new fish after a proper QT time frame and will see what they does to the mix when added to the DT tank.

I cant stand ich. You think its gone and then it isnt. I have seen it wipe 300 gallon systems out. Sounds like everything is good. CONGRATS!! keep us all updated.

Good luck! A QT should save you from ever dealing with ich, or deadlier parasites, again.
