Ich/Hypo Questions?

I bought a Puffer in January and did NOT quarantine this puffer myself...... Oh what A Big Mistake!!!!!!

From my understanding I thought it was already quarantined...
Oh What a Big Mistake!!!!

The tank is a 300G with 350 pounds of LR, BB, this is the first fish I have add in about a year, the tank is over 2 years old.

First time dealing with Ich after all these years having SW, I should not have done it and knew better.

My Quarantine is a 90g and all these fish will not fit so I need to deal with it in the main tank.

I started running Kick Ich last Thursday the Puffer does have some spots and is still eating.

My trigger has very few spots & is eating great.

My Bird Wrasses have NO spots, Look Great and eating.

My 4 Lions however are in trouble, there eyes are now cloudy and they stopped eating 3 days ago, they look very stressed. I normally soak all my foods in Vitamins and Garlic.

I did a 20% water change yesterday and started to Hypo the main tank. I normally run at 1.026, I have the tank to 1.020 right now.

Questions: Just to make sure I am understanding this right.

If I keep my tank at 1.026 and need to lower the salinity
12-14ppt than I would be looking at 1.014 - 1.012.

** Is this correct?

**I need to do this for 6 weeks?

**Will my lions be able to tolerate me lowering the salinity as stressed as they are at this point?

I have 350lb LR in the main tank, I can remove 1/2 or more to larger holding containers. I do have some inverts in the rock but than again I have had Bird Wrasses in this tank for 2 years....lol

** Would you still recommend removing the rock to a separate container?

Would the Ich be on my LR or can I put some of the rock in my 90g?

Any input or guidance would be great!!!!

Thanks,
Kaye

Hypo will kill inverts and the bacteria on your LR. Fisch should be taken out of the display and treated with hypo in seperate tank. Ich needs fish as hosts to survive so if the main tank is fishless for 6-8 weeks the ich will die off.
Now I know you said your fish will not all fit in a 90. If you are going to do Hypo maybe you could save as much LR as possible (use the 90 and maybe some 32 gal rubbermaid containers) as well as some of your LS. When this ordeal is overwith you could add what rock and sand you saved to reseed what remains in the tank???

Hope I helped a little, Ich stinks !

Just out of curiosity, I don't see anyone recommend cleaner shrimp or wrasse to treat ich. I had an outbreak of ich for the first time in 5 years of keeping my tank several months back. I added a cleaner wrasse and 2 cleaner shrimp, and have been ich free since. The kick ich didn't work, and boy is it expensive. The one fish store I deal with says they don't treat for ich in their tanks with anything but cleaner shrimp. I don't know if it works for everyone, but so far it has for me. I have to say though, I think the wrasse does a better job, because it follows the fish everywhere whereas with the shrimp the fish has to present itself (which they do if they have a problem). Also, the wrasse will eat other food if there are no parasites on the fish. They are cheap, so it might be worth a try.

1.008 is what I shoot for. it gives you a little room for error. if possible
drop the salinity to this level as quickly as possible with buffered fresh water at the proper temp.

Today I am removing the rock & dropping the Salinity to 1.010, I am just trying to pull my lions out of this mess.

I am however lucky that I run BB in my tank, it would be tough to remove all the sand.

I did read through all the threads and I have read them before, I have always read about Ich, for 5-6 years now but just never realized the reality of dealing with Ich until my tank is infested.

Just out of curiosity, I don't see anyone recommend cleaner shrimp or wrasse to treat ich.

I need a long term fix in my tank plus it is FOWLR the puffer, trigger, Lions and Wrasses would eat the shrimp. My male Bird wrasse is known to kill gobies and other wrasses the person that had it before me learned the hard way.
