Guys,

Today i noticed whie spots on my blue tang, he is the only one out of my 5 fish with the spots. I dont have a QT but i am running the Fuge. Please tell me what i should do, move him to Fuge? Chemicals, etc?

I am reading through other posts but i would like to get some quick answers by posting...

Thanks a lot:(

You need to invest in a QT/hospital tank. The only proven cures for ich are hyposalinity or copper. Your display tank has ich and the only way to cure it is to leave it fallow (fishless) for a minimum of 4 weeks. The ich parasite requires a fish host in order to complete its life cycle.

Placing your tang in a fuge will not help. I would not add chemicals to my display tank as these chemicals can be absorbed by live rock, substrate, etc and therefore therapeutic levels will not be obtained, not to mention the potential of them being released in the future.

Wow, i just spent all that time arranging rock and all that, there is no way i can catch all of my fish without taking everything down :(

There is really no other way of doing this?

I am truly shocked...

Quarantining all fish for a minimum of 4 weeks prior to adding to the display tank is the only way to prevent ich or another pathogen of being introduced. The price of a QT is so inexpensive when you look at the time, frustration and money it costs when the fish get sick and you have to treat them or worse, you lose them.

Here is a good thread on catching fish from a display tank:

She's right. You can catch all the fish without tearing down your rocks if they have an appetite. I caught all my fish through learning from that thread. If they're not eating or very weak, it's probably too late anyway.

thanks guys, the fish is eating and still look good. i will setup the QT tank, whats the bear minimum on QT tank as far as light filtration, etc. do i need to take some water from my main tank when i set it up? it doesnt need to cycle i hope :(

Read Steven Pro's article in reef keeping magazine on quarantine. It tells you everything you need to know. It depends on number of fish, bigger the better really. I used an aquaclear filter rated for 100 gallons on a 40 gallon qt tank. Has to have a heater. I bought a light, filter, heater for the tank all very cheap at Dr. Foster & Smith. I bought the tank and cover used.

On cycling, it will have to cycle, but use a sponge from your display system let it seed. Hopefully you can take one out that's been there and you won't have much of a cycle. I followed his directions to a T and have had excellent results.

Oh yeah, the article is in past issue of the magazine on line. Just go to past issues and put in his name or subject and you should get to it. It's in this web site when you first go in.

please take a look at this guy

he eats like crazy and is very active, no other fish is having this symptom, is it really ich?

Thanks.

Blue tangs are notorius for ich. Mine is rare - now ich free - been in qt for a month now, two weeks to go. He always ate like a pig too. The ich didn't seem to bother him, but I think eventually it would kill him.

From now on I QT, no exceptions. It's not worth it.

If you do not remove all the fish from the display tank, the ich will continue to live/produce. The display tank must be fallow (fishless) for at least 4 weeks in order to rid it of ich.

but if the other fish will dont show any visual signs of ich?

thanks buffer queen for all your help, im just trying to minimize the impact :(

Yeah, thanks Buffer Queen for your many helpful posts. Or is it Puffer Queen? How about just Kelly? I need to learn how to do those smiley faces. LOL

Even if the fish do not show signs, you must remove them or there will be ich in this tank and there will be reoccuring infestations which can cause stress which could lead to disease - both bacterial and parasitic.

Treat now before it is too late.

I did the quick drain on a very heavily stocked with coral 80 gallon this week to catch a mean yellow tang and was terrified it would hurt my corals. Other than a real stinky living room everyone just slimmed out a little but was good to go without the tank bully within no time. I did bump over a huge digi colony which shattered but it was worth getting such a bully out of the tank IMO and he wasn't even sick. I had a huge trash can a big pump and it was a snap! I even took the trash can back for credit after I was done ( don't flame me for this :))

You must get them all out if you want to break the cycle and head ach for good. You are getting good advise.
