Ich question, treat everyone? New Tank...

Hello All Newbie here,

I have recently cycled an innovative marine sr60 and am slowly moving in my fish from their smaller Nuvo20. All of my fish, outside of one, have been with me since they were essentially the size of a dime and are very well cared for. This is my first dealing with ick/ich. I used a combination of my dirty water from my nuvo 20 tank and clean salt water to help cycle the new tank as well as try and keep the water chemistry close to their original home as possible. Parameters are all perfect/where they should be.

I first placed a new fish (Ring tail tang) in the tank that did not originally stay in my first tank. (However, he did live in a specimen tank for about a week/week and a half before being placed). (Before people get on me about having tangs in a smaller tank, the ones I have, have lived with me for 7 months (outside of the ring tail) and are happy, healthy and never had a problem. They never hid unless sleeping and all get along and this isn't biased. They will be moved to a 180 as they grow larger this is just a midway home as they are too small for the larger tank still. ) After a few days of the ring tail living in the new tank on his own I started transferring over another other fish to the tank. Since the introduction of the new fish, the ring tail has developed ich/ick. I am not sure if brought on by the stress of a new fish or if just two weeks it hadn't manifested yet? The fish do not seem aggressive towards one another.

I do have a blue hippo that will be moving into the new tank as well, so my question is, should I move all the fish over and treat them all? Or treat the new tank, rid it of ick then move the fish and hope it doesn't repeat? My hippo has not been prone to ick /ich like I have read/seen a lot online and forums so I am not sure I should risk her getting it.

My 60 in total will include Valentini Puffer, Blue Hippo, Two clowns, Sailfin tang, Kole tang, and ring tail tang. The kole and ring tail have not had issues with fighting so far despite the similar body types, and no previous cases of ick.

Move them all in and treat them all, or treat the two in there and move the others later?

First, the 60 gallon tank is too small for your tangs. The blue and sailfin need at least a 5-foot tank and that's pushing it. The ringtail needs at least a 240 gallon tank, and thats a small tank for this fish. Acanthurus tangs are very large tangs that get to over 16" long. The Kole is the only one that is even close to fitting in that tank and it still needs at least a 75.

If you want to be a truly responsible fish keeper you need to find new homes for all your tangs.

As far as the treatment of ich goes you'll want to do that outside the main display.

Good luck going forward.

Whenever ich presents itself in your tank....its will slowly transfer to each fish and kill each one, one by one. If one or any of your fish have ich in your display you must remove ALL and put in a hospital tank and treat using hypo salinity or cupramine. Ich is a fish only parasite so once all your fish are out of the display, the display becomes clean after 30-40 days as without a host, ich dies. Do not make the mistake of thinking ich will go away. It does not

Went through this!

Went through this!

Hi fellow Newbie here! I went through ICH and Marine Velvet. It wiped my entire tank out. I had 5 fish in there. I went and bought a 5 gallon Qt tank (on the smaller side but all I have space for) from Petco with HOB filter. I now QT all my fish for at least a month before introducing them.

For treatment I put up the QT got it cycled and treated with copper. Unfortunately I was not fast enough to save anything.

All in all if you have the space a QT tank is money saver in the long run and allows you to treat with stronger stuff.

4 or 5 tangs and a puffer in a 60 gallon tank. Good Lord.

Sorry, but I think that 100% DOES need to be addressed, as others have.

As for treating them, a 60 gallon is a decent QT tank for them. Pull all sand and rock out, turn it into a bare bottom hospital tank and treat them there. Then get a tank that is suitable for them. Or use some rubbermaid tubs and do the Tank Transfer Method, found here http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2507836

40 days is not enough.
71 days is the suggested
