Ich Questions

2 weeks ago I completed the move from my 72 to my 115. I didnt add anything to the tank that wasnt already in there before, but somehow my 2 tangs have gotten ich and its driving me crazy. I have been treating the tank with Kordon Ich Attack for the past week and it seems like the only thing that help me do was burn $15 out my wallet. I was wondering, if I take them out and put them in quarantine with copper, but leave my lionfish, betta, starfish, and crab in the main tank, am I accomplishing anything? The two tangs seem to be the only fish infected but i have heard that if you dont take all of the fish out for 4 weeks, the ich will prevail. What do you think?

1) Do you know how the ich could have gotten in there when I havent added anything to the tank in months?
2) Do you think I can kill the ich by just removing the two tangs as long as the other fish dont seem to be infected?

This is a swim tank right now and probably will be for another year at least. If I remove the crab and sea star and put them in my other tank, can I treat the entire tank with copper but still have the possibility of using it for a reef in the far future? My current reef is a 54g and with my son due in 4 weeks I just dont have the money or time to deal with QT or anything.

If you treat your Display tank with copper your rock and sand can't be used even for fish, much less reef. The sand and rock will leach copper for quite a long time. You must also take ALL fish out in order to have an ich free tank, the ones not visually affected either already are but just in the gills or soon will be. The best way I find is with Hypo salinity. It is very effective. The above artical is a good one. There are other stickies on this forum that are also great reads. BTW the tank was already infected from the beginning, Ich isn't developed, it's introduced. The fish were infected all along but had them in small doses, and the stress of the move made them more suseptable.

Congratulations on your son by the way.

Thank you.

Do you know of any resources that outline the specific details of hyposalinity. I have read about it before, I just dont know if I slowly drop the salinity down to 1.09 with the fish in there or not.

Should drop it down in 2-3days and keep it that way for 6weeks. Leave your inverts and corals in your display and all of your fish in your QT. You should be fine. Take 3-5days to raise the sg back up.
