I get asked about Identification between these two often, and have figured out that I dont even know a sure way !

so how do you tell ?

if the white dots move [different place day to day] does that mean its ich ?

if Freshwater bath makes the fish perk up and be more active and eat more ... does that confirm velvet ?

when its far into the disease, fish with velvet gets alot of mucus on its skin, but I guess thats too far into the disease ...

so how do you tell ?

would TT work on Velvet ?

TIA.

so how do you tell ? Easiest way for an experienced observer is behavior. Oodinium infected fish tend to be reclusive, hang near overflow returns, and avoid direct light.

if the white dots move [different place day to day] does that mean its ich ? Irrelevant. You may never see "white dots" in initial stages of ich infestation as it may be only in the gills

if Freshwater bath makes the fish perk up and be more active and eat more ... does that confirm velvet ? While fresh water dips temporarily ameliorate the symptoms of velvet, I would not suggest this as a diagnostic process. For flukes, however, it is a good diagnostic process.

so how do you tell ? Of course you could read the fish disease parasite stickies . . .

would TT work on Velvet ? No.

TIA.

IME; a fish with ich will oftentimes not have visible symptoms or if they do, it's usually "sprinkles" here & there. A fish with marine velvet is oftentimes completely covered. And the sprinkles for ich are always white, whereas with velvet there is a golden sheen if observed from the right angle.

if Freshwater bath makes the fish perk up and be more active and eat more ... does that confirm velvet ?

If the fish seems to be breathing easier, it highly suggests velvet.
