Ich??

I have a 6 line wrasse in my tank which I have noticed developed some white spots. Started on his tail and now is working its way up. I am almost 100% certain its ich. Other fish seem to be fine and the wrasse is acting normal at this point, still eating and swimming around like it usually does. I dont have a QT tank. Last time I dealt with this I lost all of my fish. This scares the crap out of me, Id rather not lose another batch of fish. I plan on having coral so I know I cant us anything that has copper in it. Im currently feeding selcon and mysis shrimp which I heard can help but is there anything else I can do?! Should I just take him out and back to a LFS or what?? All input is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

You need to decide if you want to manage ich or get rid of it.

To manage ich cross your fingers and hope.

To get rid of it all the treatments available will require a QT and some commitment. The options are tank transfer method (TTM), copper or Chloroquine phosphate, hypo-salinity. Note hypo is the hardest to pull off and there is some evidence that some ich strains have built up a tolerance to it.
Of the treatments listed I prefer TTM. You can go over to the fish disease forum and read up on all of the options in the stickies at the top.

All fish must go into the treatment and your display must remain fallow or fishless for 72 days.

Things that will not get rid of ich: kick ich, garlic, freshwater dip, raise the temps, ginger, anything that claims to be reef safe, dancing around your tank during a full moon

I wish you good luck on whatever option you choose.

Thank you so much for your response! I guess Ill be looking for another tank for QT unfortunately. I guess my next question is, what do I need for the tank aside from the equipment? Sand, rock? Forgive my rookie questions. Ive read some and everybody has their own opinions so I figured if I could speak with just one person I would be better off. Thanks again!

Hold On. No sand or rock for a QT. All you need is a tank, heater, filter, maybe an airstone depending filter flow, some pvc fittings for the fish to hide out in. I like to get an ammonia badge since I do not cycle my QT. I pull it out when needed and do WC's, Others will put a filter sponge in the sump for a few weeks to get some bacteria on it. Then put the sponge in the QT and replace the sponge when done with the Qt.

I like to do the TTM when I get new fish. If you go with this treatment Wal -mart is your friend here. Go pick up a couple of those 10 or 15 gallon tank kits they got. No matter which treatment you use read the stickies in the fish disease forum, my memory is not what it used to be LOL. It has been awhile since I added any fish and even longer since I had to treat ich.

There is a sticky at the top of this forum and in the fish disease forum on setting up a QT. In the future Qt your fish when you get them and you will not have to deal with ich or other ailments in your Dt.

Awesome, thanks for your input!

forgot to mention I would read all the stickies in the fish disease forum and the reef chemistry forum when you have time. They are a wealth of info and can really help.
