Ick

The tang i picked up yesterday has a little case of ick. I have read a few different ways to treat it but im not sure which way to go. He is in a QT with some live rock and two snails. Hyposalinity will kill everything but the fish. Copper is bad. Feeding it garlic seems the way to go, but he is still stressed and is only picking at food. Plus it is easter so i cant get any garlic capsules. How do you treat ick?

Hyposalinity is probably the best. You can also try an ich med in the QT but it may kill off any live rock you have in there. If I had one with ich and it was in another tank I'd probably do both.

Its a unicorn tang. I got it to eat food soaked in garlic/ chunks of garlic. hopefully it will help too. Can i take out the live rock with with the goodies growing on it? or is it already infected? how slowly should i lower the salinity?

I cant tell, im going to do a freshwater dip and a big water change. He is eating like a pig though. Im soaking everything in garlic. I cant deided whether to drop the salinity or dose the QT tank.

If he's eating plenty I'd just leave it at that. Unless he's absolutely COVERED in ich, he'll be able to pull through with good water conditions and good food.

If its eating thats a good sign!I agree whith jx about the added stress it would be a nono unless things progress

lots of smaller meals to keep up water quality. Trottie said somewhere about the fatfish being less suseptable to disease and I would have to agree. Fish looked healthy could have just been weekend by the stress of several recent moves. IMHO. All so need to soak all those nets and what not probably

will keep em crossed for the little one

Well ****, i guess i should have checked this before i went down stairs. i did a 90 second dip. he was unhappy for a few minutes afterwards but then i saw him pick the bottom looking for food so i threw in some flakes and he gobbled them right up. i hope i didnt set his recovery back any. If it gets worse i will try the Ridick, there is basically nothing in the tank, a few snails.... are they susceptible to ick? i dont want to them to die in the treatment, i would prefer to move them over to the main tank but they arent worth infecting the display.

90 seconds is fine. I don't know if that would do anything anyways. I think it's recommended for 3 minutes. But, I could be wrong. I've never tried it.

think if the fella is clear for thirity days the Ick wont be a problem in the system any more but could be wrong thought that it needed a fish to host and incubate

A friend of mine used to run a commercial saltwater breeding/ fragging business and he said he would do 2 minutes then drop them in a treated tank for 3 days and they would be fine

I would say leave it feed it quality food and water and wait.

If things worsen or it stops eating then medicate.

At least a couple of weeks after the Ick is no longer present. IMHO

Thanks, im watching Blood Diamond, when its over im going to do a water change and test all the parameters.
