The soft coral peeps told me to go ahead and post here instead as they narrowed it down to a non-photosynthetic....long story short my wife likes pink things and bought something without consulting me or a book or a guide and id like to know what it is, and possible ways to keep it from dying. Thanks for any advice/tips/id's or anything else you can give me. :)

looks like a carnation coral (Dendronephthya spp.) feed phytoplankton additions KEEP OUT OF BRIGHT LIGHT!! good luck

Looks like scleronephthya to me. Take a look at this thread. Better to keep it in a high reflected flow or upflow near the powerhead, feed frequently (better constantly or several times a day) and a lot (sorry for vague description, mine are opening to feed starting from some food density, like light snow in the tank. Very little didn't induced opening).
