I have had this little mantis for a few months. I have never been able to get a real good look at the features until I could it lounging on some shells today. I would like to see if these pictures help to ID this mantis. I tried to get the best shots I could...
relation of the size compared to some shells (yea- it is laying on its back having a snack)
(sorry Im not good with the anatomy of these)
I dont know what the smashers clubs are called in proper terms, but I think these two pictures show some white spots on them(?), a little color display, and the shape of the tail.
Over-all I see the color as being a dark maroon/brown. I do see a hint of green in the legs and uderside. I dont notice it beating up on any snails or crabs and there are many different sizes and types for the choosing. Seems all my shrimp does is come out to beg for some frozen squid. It does make a little burrow under the rocks in the sand. I have not seen it use anything for a door to close off its tunnel. It doesnt come completly out of its hole very often-if ever! I thought this display it was showing today was really odd. I even had some company over that got to witness the shrimp rolling around in circles, laying and lounging under the algae ball having a blast in the nest of shells.
Any help to ID or tell male from female with these pics?
