ID help on Red Macro

Anyone now what this is ? I can't see to get a handle on it despite 5 Maro ID Books. All I have are these images, not the actual algae

nice macro. there is a guy on the board that had the same macro. can't think of his name but i believe he had an ID for it.

Cool looking macro, does it keep to itself, or is it invasive?

It is growing in large dense 'clumps' in someones sump. It seems to be a fast grower and is very easy to remove by I thining it out. Her tangs love it.

I have passed the pics around and have had some contacts with Julian. I also got a sample from a local reefer. The algae appears to be a over densified species of Scinaia hormoides

Could it be some sort of Botryocladia?

This one I have in my aquarium, and it seems to be much less red when it grows in bright light.

The picture below is right under the surface under 150W HQI:

This is under a rock (in shadow):

I am certainly not sure but it looks alot like the one I have.

We don't think it is Botryocladia but we are not 100% sure. Are you sure yours is Botryocladia?

No, I'm not totally sure it is Botryocladia I have, it is my best guess, and yours look alot like what I have.

Why don't you think it is Botryocladia?

It does not seem to grow like any Botryocladia I have seen. The stuff I posted has very few "rabbit ear" growths or bubbles. It is mostly tubular branches, which some Scinaia grow like. More than likely what ever it is it is not growing in its more wild form.

I have some other people looking at it.

I sent your pic out. And got the same response I gave ( does not grow right), that it is not a Botryocladia, which form distinct grapes on stalks and not "rabbit ears", which Scinaia do.

The same response I gave you kinda' :lol: But a little more. Botryocladia grows distinct "grapes" on stocks. They never form "bunny ears". We may be sending some in to the worlds leading red algae guy at the UH, Dr. Abbott

I think I have the same stuff it came on a piece of LR and then grew on the sponge of my protein skimer. After I took it off the sponge the few pieces that were left were glowing like they came from planet X!
