ID Help Please: Red Macro Algae with long branches of slimy blobs

Hi,

Could someone please identify this?

I haven't introduced anything new into my tank for almost a year. But one of my favorite things about this hobby is seeing new stuff and having no idea where it came from. Good live rock is a miracle! (When it's not a curse.)

About a month ago I noticed it growing, and it was nice looking and added some color and movement in a spot that needed it, plus it was slow-growing so I let it go. It was something new that I didn't have to pay for.

It's at the point now though that I wanted to prune it back as it's encroaching on some corals; but when I broke some off, it was exactly like handling an LPS polyp so I felt guilty about it.

I'd feel better dealing with it if I know what it is. If someone wouldn't mind identifying it please. There's a picture of the whole thing in the tank as well as a macro shot of the blobs I pulled out sitting on the glass cover of the tank.

Thanks very much!

Randy

I tried to respond to your message but the system says I can't send you a message because I haven't put up enough posts; which makes perfect sense. :/

Of course you can have whatever I prune off, which will be at least half of it, probably more.

You can email me at: rj.tangmonk@gmail.com and let me know when you want to come get it.

So I've received 9 emails requesting that I ship some to them, which I'm totally cool with, but no answers as to what it is.

An interesting thing is: the ones I took out of the water evaporated down to a barely noticeable haze on the glass cover of the tank in just a few hours after taking them out of the water.

I don't want to do anything to this until I know what it is.

I shot you an email. Let me know if it didn't come through.

I ship a lot of macro, I can help you out if needed since I'm local to ya

It's probably a variety of Nemastoma. Very... Blubbery? Slimy to the touch, maybe a little iridescent under blue lighting? That would be my guess.

that is most certainly nemastoma.....and I for one would be very interested in buying some if you would consider it

Yup! That's exactly what it is! Thanks a lot you guys!!!

Also, I made myself available all week day and night for it to be picked up, but no one emailed.

I don't drive and I'm currently jobless, so for me shipping is not possible right now - sorry.

I'm keeping it growing in my refugium. If I finally find a job, one day I'll spring for a cab and go to the PO and ship some out. It's really fast growing so there'll be plenty!!

I'll post when that's a possibility, unless Mr Finz wants to email and make plans. I kind of did want to ask you about a couple of other things going on in my tank while you were here. Just lemme know.

I'd drive to Boston if I could :jester:
But you may be able to have the mailman pick up the package with his usual rounds if you pay/print the label online. If you go to USPS's website, they'll even deliver free Priority shipping supplies to your door.

You're looking at about $100+ worth of Nemastoma sp. in your tank, probably more, and I'd bet you'd get $30 per 1.5" piece.
