ID Help Please.

Hello, Just noticed this white stuff growing on my larger base rock today. I didn't notice it yesterday so I think it is growing really, really fast. It does not wave in current so somewhat firm. Could it be some type of sponge or algae? Anyone recognize it? Given its fast rate of growth I'm concerned that it will get out of control in no time. Uploaded a couple photos (not the best - sorry!). Thanks for any help in identifying this.

Sponge for sure, could possibly be some species of tunicate, doubtful on that though, Alex, Ill take sponge for $100, lol

Don't keep it if it worries you. If you don't want it just scrub it off. I wouldn't want it but that's just me.

Sponges are beneficial fauna in a reef aquarium and a sign of a healthy aquarium for the most part, no reason to eradicate it IMO.

THANKS for your quick responses. I didn't know sponges could spread that quickly, and also never really noticed any that had so many tubes like this one has. I'm just glad it is NOT a fungus! I know sponges are beneficial but my reef real estate is valuable (only have a 55 gal) so not sure I want to keep it. I guess I could leave it alone for a while - as long as I'll be able to remove it if I need to without a lot of trouble. (I can't take out the rock it is on because its a large base rock.) Thanks again for the info. I appreciate it!
