I have this sponge looking think on my one rock and i dont know what it is here is a picture of it. But can you guys please tell me what it is and wheater or not i have to bother with it or can i just leave it there because i dont havea clue what it is.

Thanks

Im not sure as to the species, but I have had something that looks very similar to that in my tanks before... I left it alone and never had any trouble with it, it grew on the back side of my rocks at a rather fast rate, within 18 months of me noticing the sponge, it became the size of my hand. Nice coraline growth by the way!
btw, I must be having a long day if its the year 2216!! haha

Thanks Chad, Yea it looks like a sponge and yea the coraline in my tank is awesome. It grew on every rock and covered it within the first year, it was great. But yes it does look like a sponge and it does grown rather quickly. My camera is a little off i think.

this excites me that I might be able to keep my sponges that came as hitch-hikers. I have a deep purple one, and a nice white one. IMO, the black ones don't really seem that appealing to me, have a few of those too.

Thanks guys. Hopefully these are sponges i also just found another one on a back rock. So they are either multiplying or just came from no where.

Behind rocks is where I had them as well... just out of curiosity, what was the source for your LR? When I had what looked like those sponges, the rock was the aquacultured stuff that you can find from a few florida based companies, and it was the only tank I have ever had with it.

I am not totally sure Chad but the rocks where from my LFS and i am almost 100% sure its fiji live rock.

I was just trying to draw a correlation on the source. Up until you posted, in 20 years of reefing, the only time that I saw that particular sponge was from that LR in my tank.
I dont think its something bad though, I am 90% sure that it is the same sponge that I had, which I really enjoyed and never had any problems with (it did grow quickly and I had to remove some of it though) butI never was able to positively identify it as anything but a sponge.
I would enjoy it and be happy that your system can support sponges, besides, it contrasts nicely with your coraline! :)

Well thank you very much Chad and i will keep you posted on what happens. If it gets to big i will have to cut some off and get rid of it, but i am not worried about that right know. But when the time comes i will deal with it.
Thanks again
