It is neither good nor bad. It is good if it benefits your tank and bad if it harms anything in your tank. Those sponge do neither of these. It is not even attractive to look at (but that's just me).

I'd have to disagree. Sponges are amazing natural living water filters that contribute to the biodoversity in a tank. The only downside is that they can become invasive if conditions are right, but that's rarely an issue and they are easily trimmed back or scraped off. Also, some can pack also a powerful sting to your hand (black demosponges), but the one in your photos is not one of those.

So, tell me why aquarists do not bother with them if they do significant beneficial filtering role in the tank. They even compete with food that are otherwise eaten by the tank inhabitants. They do not affect water chemistry in terms of filtration. So what filtration are you refering to?
