I have noticed these growing in my skimmer area and overflows, but nothing in the display. The tank is about 6 months old and I have had snail eggs everywhere, but looking at snail egg images, these don't look like that to me.

Yup, pineapple sponges. There are two possible problems that can pop up with them.
1. They can irritate corals if they touch them as they are silica based so can be kind of pokey.
2. If they get too out of control they can clog pipes a bit as they can grow right inside pipes and even in your skimmer body.

Other than that they are harmless.
