I picked this up at a frag swap, no one seemed to know what it was actually called. It looked funny and I have a leather tank so I figured why not. I was told just set it on the bottom of the tank and it would bury its foot. Does anyone here know what it is called?

Hmm it didnt really look like that to me, but maybe. When its closed up it literally doos look like a mushroom though. Supposedly this one doesnt adhere to rocks just buries itself thats why i figured it was something different.

It does look like the head of a baby toadstool. Perhaps they fragged it up high on the stalk? Don't be surprise if it starts growing a stock. Either that or you've got yourself a super rare oddball softie : )

That's a neat leather, would love to see more photos of it closed up and maybe different angles? :)

He didn't seem happy where I had him..... I think he was having a hard time with the substrate trying to dig himself in so I placed his foot between some rocks thinking he will like it better. Here is a closed up shot since he is mad now anyways.

The pictures suck ... I know.... by the time I got my camera back out he moved on me again. I had to take some from the side through some coraline. Oh well ill get better ones later hopefully if he moves a bit again. Here is some of him closed up though.

So I get home and it decided to float around and get just about the size of a soccer ball, but just a hair smaller. I took a picture of the "foot" or base. I cant figure out how to plant this thing. I don't want to stir the sand bed all over. I wedged it between some rocks for now hoping it will take root somehow.

The odd thing is It didn't even care I grabbed it and moved it around a few times. I figured it would close right up... nope. It had the consistency of like a raw chicken breast if that makes sense. Do you guys still think it is a toadstool? I need to invest in a different lens for this.:fun4:

Ugh it keeps getting bigger and it wont sit still even with my pumps next to off.....

Im debating rubber banding it to a rock but i dont want to hurt it.

I used to have a toadstool leather just like that! That was exactly what i did as well, Just rubber banded it to a piece of live rock and it attached itself in a about a week or 2. Didn't hurt it a bit - these seem to be super tough.

I still think it is weird that it behaves that way. It almost seems more like an anemone than a coral. It literally buried itself in the sand so just the top is sticking out..... This thing is exciting me so much for being a cheap coral. Way worth the 15 bucks.

See... Literally it dug it's own hole and buried itself. Is that normal?

it's not a leather and sure as heck not a toadstool!

it's a Sea Pen.

...and that foot is called a peduncle. It uses it to fasten itself to the sea floor until it decides to move

it's very hard to keep in captivity: requires a very deep sand bed (do not place on the rocks!) and regular, heavy feedings. Not a coral for a novice, imo.

please do your research before you buy ....coz it's $15 doesn't mean it's an automatic coral you need to buy.

do your best with it and good luck

Ding, ding, ding - I think we have a winner! :hammer:

Oh wow i see what you mean by very deep..... well if it looks happy right now should i still panic and try to get rid of it? It seems to have found a place it likes at least. I don't know of anyone with a foot deep sandbed i could even give it to if need be.
