Got this the other day at lfs said it was a sponge colored fan what is anyones thoughts pic click on gallery.

It is a sponge. Likely nonphotosynthetic, filter feeder. Keep in moderately strong water flow, and low light. It can be kept in high light- darker conditions are mostly to deter algae from growing on top of and smothering it.
Hopefully youve got a lot of fish- the excess fish food and waste will be good for keeping it healthy.

If your tank is well established, with a decent fish load, I wouldnt be concerned about feeding it. If thats not the case though (or if you filter heavily) you may want to throw in some additional food on a regular basis (multiple small feedings is best- most people dont keep up with that though). Marine snow is probably the best product I can think of to use, though if you ran some mysis shrimp/seafood through a food processor, that would probably work just as well, if not better.

Well my tank has been set up for about 2.5 years with 3 tangs and a set of clowns as far as filter just a protein skimmer and thats it so should be no need to feed right? Thanks for all your help.

I think youll probably be OK; just watch for any signs of recession (normally discolored/white or erosion). If you see even a hint of that, Id start feeding it manually.
