Sorry for bad image but

I have these about 1/2 inch long white tentacles growing on the

rocks and it is slowly spreading. anyone have any idea what these

are?

I don't think any sponges are harmful...hard to keep alive...VERY. They require alot of food in the water, they are filter feeders.
 
can't they release toxins or spike you amonia when they die? i dont know just think i heard that somewhere.
 
I'm not sure on the exact specifics of the release of toxins but I would say a spike in ammonia yes for the simple fact it is decomposing.

I know in my FW tank if my filters weren't maintained well I would get a spike in the ammonia from the fish "relieving themselves"

I am new though so don't take my advice to the bank...get some more input from actual reefers!! :D
 
many hitch hiker sponges will grow and flourish in a tank. They often have boom and bust cycles on their own. The ones you buy are the ones that die. You are best to leave that one alone and let it do it's thing for the time being. Consider it a natural, living filter.
