i'm starting to think so i got them from the fish store in brunswick a couple of months back they were sold to me as conches but from looking around i'm starting to lean toward whelks as well if so you think i need to remove them and the eggs? they haven't seen them eat anything. they only come out at night stay under the sand most of the day every once in awhile i see them in the day time and they been eating pellet food i thought whelks only ate meat.

You may want to give him a call about those. I do know the guy who ownes the store will go to the beach to get his feeder shrimp. But he did get some stuff from ora not long ago, so those could be conchs.

You can try getting a couple of snails in the tank to see if the are killed and leave shells with the tell-tale hole in them.

If they have a "tattoo" like pattern on their trunk, they are whelks. I had a bunch, but now I have a fat mantis!

so i take it that having those guys are a bad thing so do i need to get them out my tank or are they going to be fine
they haven't harmed anything and they've been in there a while now i have noticed that i only have 2 snails now (one in overflow and one made its way to the fuge ) maybe they are the reason for that i just thought that it was my blue legged hermits not other snails haha
Ikaria i thought mantis shrimp were a bad thing man i'm learning something every day

oh i see can you keep those in a tank with damsels cause i'm about to set up a small tank for my three damsels and think it would be cool to get one

Dez,

I don't know which they are. But look at the empty snail shells and see if there is a hole in the shells. Whelks actually drill a hole in the shells and eat the snails that way. Next time you go to the beach, look at the shells you find. Most will have holes in them :)

Conchs have eyes on etestalks that protrude out past their body with tiny little blue eyes (most of the time).
Whelks do not have these elogated eye stalks.
