Hey guys! Quick ID. Found two species they could be and not sure which. What do you guys think? ImageUploadedByTapatalk1410632489.252479.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1410632538.058525.jpg

Thanks,

The experts might argue about this snail's correct ID. It's in the Trochus maculatus group, but it could be one of several very similar species.

Thank you! It is a trochus snail, then? My ID guide gave me several snails (trochus, turban, etc.) that looked very alike and I wanted to know what I had.

Trochus snails usually have a black or dark foot. Astrea have white foot like the picture. But the shell shape looks like what you commonly see labeled as turban

Foot coloration isn't really diagnostic. Trochids have translucent amber discs as opercula (the trapdoor that closes the shell). Turbinids, including Astraea and Astralium species, have operc's made of shelly material, with a few notable exceptions. There are no true Turban Snails that are pyramidal in shape, although those mentioned above are related. They all eat algae.

If I collected your snails in the southwest Pacific, I'd call them Trochus maculatus.

Cheers,

Don

My first guess was Trochus as well but I didn't want to throw an ID not really knowing what I was talking about :D

Don't trochus have smoother shells while astraea are more rigged? Or is there really no physical difference in the shell.

Some of them look almost the same as Astraea snails from the top. Can't really go by smoothness, both can be smooth or have sculpture one them.

Cheers

Don
