Messing around using video and microscope and found this thing in some gunk in the overflow. What is it? It retracts and expands and appears to actively try to catch food. Click pic for video.

 
honestly i have no idea... the 2 protusins coming out and in looks like a vermetid snail to me. but i think the can only live in a tube like feather dusters do...
 
I found out from Dr. Shimek that it is a peritrich ciliate - neither plant nor animal. It's a type of saltwater colonial ciliate related to the freshwater paramecium, and its more common name is Vorticella.
