i was thinking about cutting out the front but leaving about 3 inches all the way arround and then setting in a piece of glass or acrylic behind that three in rim with marine caulk. i imagine it to look similar to a plywood tank only made of plastic.

Is there ant reason this would not work?

Caulk wont bond to acrylic properly. Youd have to get some sort of adhesive like a Weldon, to stick acrylic to any sort of plastic. And Im really not sure how thatd work, it depends on what

i dunno how thick the plastic is but the plastic is much more flexible than the glass and will want to bow out. this will put a lot of stress on the sealant and might bust.

Hold liquid. Not hold liquid without bowing, so you can put a front pane in place. Try it and let me know how it works. I definitely wouldnt risk it. Theres no such thing as an inexpensive large tank thats done correctly.

The frame would need to go around the top and the center of the tub. This would negate the viewing panel. Then I think once you cut the tub you are losing alot of structuaral integrity

You could always use the tub for a top-down viewing tank! I'm not saying that you can't do what you're proposing, but I think it's risky.

imo you should just spend the money on a tank that you wont have to worry about. It's better safe than sorry...
