what is the ideal substrate for an almost full grown peacock?

i was thinking maybe sand mixed with crush coral?

and/or if so, how deep should it be?

Depends on what else is in the tank. Is there a PVC tube? Live rock? Caves? Rock rubble? How big? How much? All that.

"Standard" recommendations are either a "tunnel-able" live rock (something that the mantis can dig under) or (easier) a PVC tube. Lots of live rock rubble helps the animal either support the tunnel or decorate the tube.

I use a 4-5" deep sand bed for nitrate control. Nitrates in my mantis tank are zero :)

i think he's asking about the sand in particular? in that case, use oolitic (sugar sized) sand. crushed coral is too abrasive and will wear on the mantis' underside. 2-3 inches, deeper is fine though.

at any rate, dan's advice is still good. personally i dont like pvc in my tank if i can avoid it though. unless it is well hidden.
