Ideal tankmates for Clownfish and Anemones.

HelLo, I am creating a 29 gallon clownfish/Anemone Tank.

I know for sure that I want to put a Maroon Clown and Percular clown in the tank as well as a Bubble Anemone and Pearl anemone.

What fish, soft coral, hard coral, and crabs are best suited to be in this tank?


The following fish I am particularly interested in: Mandarin fish, picasso Triggers, dragon wrasse, cowfish, blennies, small flame angel.

I am also interest in sun polyps, and star fish.

The Maroon Clown will most likely pick on the Percula Clown. As for the other fish list, the Mandarin I would say no intell your tank is at least a year or so. The Picasso Triggers and Dragon Wrasse are not reef safe and gets to big for a 29g. Blennies and th Flame Angle sould be fine.

What kind of filters and skimmers are you using?

Nope to the Percula Clown (will get picked on). The Picasoo Trigger and Dragon Wrasse as Bobby mentioned will probably destroy any corals.
The 29g tank isn't big enough to hold enough live rock to support a pod colony for the Manderin so it would be out also.

A good community fish that is pretty and on the small side that would be a nice addition to your tank would be a Royal Gramma.

Another nice fish would be a firefish.

You might want to look at the Blue/Green Chromis. You can often times find purple or bi-color chromis too. They can "school" together if you got a few of them but in a 29g you have to be very careful of your bio load. You could do one or two of these.

BTW, I just noticed you have a 250 MH light on that tank. Man that is a lot of light for a tank that small. Did that come with the tank or did you ad it? I'd image that will add a lot of heat.

It is alot of light! Almost to much. My 175 MH ballast went and Hello Lighting had a sale on 250 MH retros at the time, so I got it for a good deal. Heat is not a issue from 78 to 81 degrees in the summer with no fans . I guess it is because of the sump, and the canopy is well vented. It dose help in the winter though.

I added on a UV Sterilzer(which I don't plan on using all the time), a protein skimmer, and a light upgrade that has extra fans and with bring my wattage up to 108 watts of 50/50 actinic blue. I also have R2 moonlights. I plan on putting the mandarin after 6 months, And my buddy is going to jumpstart my biologiacal levels by introducing sand/rock/water from his tank.

Which angel fish would be safe?

Anyone have Any input on a good corals that is very colorful, and/or interessting to put in the tank?

What about cowfish or spotted boxfish?

I am confused as to what will live with a anemone (coral wise).

Oh, and thanx for the info, I will keep only pecular clowns then.

Anyone have any recommends for anemone types?

Seriously, this is so much fun, super expensive, but wow, FUN!!!!

Any kind of dwarf angel fish should be ok but they may want to eat or nip at corals.

Cowfish and boxfish need larger tanks then a 29 gallon.

With that lighting assuming it is power compacts I would say you are safe with zoos, shroms bottom to middle and maybe some LPS at the top of the tank.

As far as an anemone I think they need stronger lighting, such as a Metal Halide.

Also what kind of skimmer do you have?

I would say for anemone a Rose Bubble Tip Anemone would be super in that tank. If you went with a Long Tenticled Anemone, they prefer to be on sand, so it would always stay on bottom. A RBTA would stay on rock pretty close to the light. It would always be visable and percs should host in it as well.

As for corals, you could put any soft corals; mushrooms, leathers, etc.. or LPS corals: Euphyllias (frogspawn , hammer, etc..). Bubble coral, Xenias. Probably some SPS higher to the light.

I had a 29 high that I was going to make a clown/anemone tank, then lights went out on my 75g so the money went to that. Good luck, sounds like fun. Just be patient. Anemones need a tank that is at least 6 months old before they will survive well. You might read Joyce Wilkerson's book "Clownfishes". A wealth of information there.

What size tank would be large enough for a cowfish or boxfish? would they then be safe?

Anyone else have any interesting/beautiful fish they would like to recommend? I can only keep 6 fish probably, so they all have to be choice picks.

Any other corals?

For a cowfish or boxfish a 125 gallon or bigger. But if I not mistaken, someone correct me if I am, Cowfish and Boxfish release a deadly poison when stressed that can wipe out a whole tank.

Fish wise Firefish, clown fish, dwarf angles, and gobies.

Coral low to medium light requirements.

I don't think it's true about them wiping out the tank. I live down in Miami and I go and do specimen collecting for my tank on my trips out to the beach. I've had a green spotted codfish die on me days in from having it in the tank. Simply because my puffer (tiny old thing) wouldn't leave it alone. Well in the end, it passed. But that was my healthiest tank ever. I had to break it down because of a move and have now started a larger tank. But I think that if you pay attention to the activity of your tank mates and as I call it, do roll calls, you shouldn't have issues with odd fish killing off your tank. Simply because you have to take their carcasses out as soon as you spot them.

For the better part of two years I had a tank with no filter at all. (55gallon). I did no water changes. Just picked up stuff from sea side for it. Everything was healthy. Nitrate/nitrite was balanced. No issues. You just need good active live sand.

So take your first tank as a learning experience. Go out and catch a few triggers from seaweed on a kayak. It's loads of fun. And welcome to your new happy place. If it gets frustrating take a step back and just turn the lights out for a few days. And if you have more compatibility questions, try the charts from live aquaria. Try one new thing a week. See where it's happy in the tank. I've had non compatibles live happily together. Just got to give each their space.
