I have heard that clams actually like nitrate levels higher than what is ideal for a typical reef - and that the nitrate helps them grow. Because of this I have heard that it is better to skim a system with clams less heavily than a typical system.
How true is this and what kind of nitrate levels are ideal. If the system is heavily skimmed should I add more clam safe fish to increase the nutrient load in the tank or just go with a smaller skimmer?
