identify my mantis?

I recently bought(yes, I paid money for one of these little monsters) a mantis shrimp and have it set up in a 5 gallon mini reef with live rock and some mushroom and button polyps. It is approximately 1 1/2 inches and is lime green. I believe it is one of the smashers as I have heard some small tapping noises coming form the tank. I'm sorry I don't have a photo but can anyone attempt an identification from this description and give me any info you can on how big it might get? Thanx

Biggest I've heard of are Dr. Roy's 12" - ers.

Chances are it won't get much larger than 5", but there are several species that reach a larger size. A photograph for identification would be beneficial to identifying it, prefereably a clear shot of the telson.

a well hidden mantis...

a well hidden mantis...

The 27" statement sounded a little far fetched to me since I had heard previously that species varied between approximately 2 inches and 12 inches (but if you can site your sources I might be convinced). I'll post a photo as soon as the little bugger decides to show himself. I haven't seen the mantis since I put him in the tank and so I also haven't witnessed him eat. Any suggestions to convince him to come out? He's only been in the tank for 4 days so I'm not surprised that he's a little shy but since I also know he attacked 3 fish in someone elses tank I should suspect he'll come around soon enough...any suggestions would be appreciated.

(Pssst! T-T-Trigger was making a joke...)

The biggest that I have heard tell of is about a foot and a half, and that's a Spearer, I do believe, which are far less common in aquaria.

The largest of all mantis shrimp, Lysioquillina maculata, can reach up to 40 centimeters in length. It is monogamous and the male (seen here) has enlarged spearing appendages for impaling passing fish.

If you can get a picture of the Mantis, specifically the meral spots from it's foelimbs or a clear picture of the telson (the tail), Dr. Roy will ID it for you.

Welcome aboard, btw. I have a little G. Viridis that is about 2.5 inches or so (Baron von Munchausen).
He lives with a green mithrax crab (only whacked twice, when the crab foolishly tried to swoop down upon the Baron's shrimp platter), about 5 hermits (hardly ever touched for food, as he vastly prefers snails) and a constantly rotating cast of snails...rotating on a spit, with a bit of B-B-Q sauce and a side of cole slaw, that is.

Ahem.
