Should I keep it? Thx.

It's white and furry with pointy black claws. ??

DRC69 - I've had the same rock but suprised it's alive since my BB switchover!

wsun083 - I'm pretty sure it's not an emerald, or at least nothing like I've seen before.

Looks like Mithrax, which is related to Emeralds (same Family). I have one in my tank and it does no harm. In fact, I almost never see it because it hides all the time. But, some people don't like to have crabs because you never know what they'll eat!

The common name is teddy bear crab. I would definitely remove it if you have any small fish that sleep in or on the sand bed. It is a night time predator and fun to feed shrimp bits to. It is also a very cool crab and lives in a hole in your live rock. I don't know how, but the hole gets bigger as the crab grows. I had one I kept for quite a while. When I first saw it in my 29 G it was smaller then a dime and must have come in on some live rock. When I moved everything to a bigger tank I put it in a separate tank. I am pretty sure it killed two scooter blennies I had, but no way of knowing for sure. Put it in your sump or a separate tank with bigger fish.

laverda - I don't have any small fish but maybe he's the cause of the last 5 cleaner shrimp dissappearances? Do you think? Never found hide nor hair of them which is strange.

bromion - Good to know. Right about hiding all the time. I got this rock over 2 years ago now!

Just to be safe I might rid him of the tank anyway.

get rid of him if a crab has pointed claws get him out of there. I can guarantee he is where your cleaner shrimps are going.

Any crab with pointy claws especially if they are black are bad...

That's funny...lol! They can't get any more pointed or black. He must be a bad, bad crab.

He might be eriphia sebana which would be really bad...

Or maybe a gorilla crab if hairy which is also really bad

Either way get him out

He may NOT be bad... but he probably is. They are fun pets, just not reef or fish safe. You can catch him with a baited jar -- lean it up against his favorite rock before lights out with a piece of shrimp in the bottom. By morning you will have trapped all kinds of stuff, but if you keep watch I bet the guy is in the jar just a few minutes after dark!

Great idea. I'm sure that scent of shrimp we'll lure him out real quick!

But what do I with him once I catch it. My sump he'll end up dead....., I don't have a refugium....and other than the obvious? Maybe a lfs will take it, then sell it probably!

Sean save him, hell make a nice meal for my mantis shrimp;)

That'd be a cool sight. Mantis vs. Gorilla! You got to video that.

I would think it would not be able to catch the shrimp since they are active at night too. Fish that sleep on or in the sand bead are easy targets. Mine could move pretty fast when it wanted to.

easy way that I got one of those out wach what rock he goes into and pull that rock out and run it under tap water till he comes out. I also used a long metal shishkabob to uuuuuummmmm nudge him out :):):)
