I have these polyps that started growing in my tank. Over the past 6 mos they have went from 3 to about 15- and some are in different areas of the tank.

Can anyone identify and let me know how invasive these are.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Umm ya, those are the vile weed known as aptasia. Most aquarists spend hours melting any sign of them out of the tank as they are invasive and sting corals. Aptasia is a type of anemone, just not anything good or colorful. GL

peppermint shrimp have been known to eat them….and if you know anyone who can get you berghia nudibranches they are your best bet, as aptasia are the only thing they eat.

do not break or tear them apart in the tank it will only make things worse…if the rock can be removed then you can do manual removal of them…but take a head count if you can, cause they will retreat, and though you think you may have got them all they will will pop out once back in the safety of the tank..

if you can afford the time and lack of rock you can give the rock an acid bath…or at the very least a bath in chlorine bleach…be sure to rinse the rock very well afterward and allow it to sit in prime for a day or so to remove any left over chlorine.

Get rid of them, they will just sting and kill your corals.

Ways to remove them
-Inject with aptasia-x or joes juice (with syringe) [both online]
-cut of on the base (warning, if you do not cut all it will grow back)
-Irritate so that it shrinks and cover it in reef glue then rip off
-use an extremely powerful laser pointer and destroy it (my favorite)

But definitely get rid of them!

I personally cant wait to see the next unlucky aipasia I find since learning about the lazer trick. I have a super powered one with a focus lens. Like i said. I cant wait :)

We are starting our first marine tank soon and my boyfriend loves lasers!! Haha, what strength would you recommend? And does it need to be focus-able?
Would be handy to have one sitting around if/when we get an aptasia attack :D Cheers

If you could remove LR and boil them off is my way of doing it. Then you would have to recure the LR.

boiling live rock is very dangerous, i would not advise that.

a simple dip in vinegar, muriatic acid, or bleach will be fine…and kill the little buggers…

be sure to throughly rinse and clean the rock if any bleach or type of acid is used...
