The LFS I go to has a section outside the system of inverts that runs "hypo" it's not low enough to cure but it is lower at 1.012. Their goal is to ease stress on the fish and they usually don't keep any fish more than a month so they feel it is worth the extra set-up. No fish with the exception of maybe mollies can stand hypo indefinitely. But as Kevin2000 has said. It's our job to make sure they are healthy before they reach the display tank. I don't think the LFS wants to put that kind of mark on themselves to say they have QT'd healthy fish only to have someone buy it from them and put it into a system that is diseased and have the customer upset when they lose a QT'd fish to parasites. Now if we can get the distributors and catchers to get on the band wagon, maybe we can see a change. If only the whole world was on the same page Most if not all parasites could be a thing of the past. Try to tell fisherman in the Philippines not to sell any fish for 2 months and starve their families.
Many LFS will keep tanks at lower than std reef levels .. partly because it save money (salt) and largely because it facilitates/quickens acclimation of fish which are transported by the wholesaler at relatively low salinity levels (to reduce transportation stress).
