Kent, I'm curious how you got that figure... the last time my husband and I priced materials to build a 200 gallon plexiglass reptile tank for one of our Tegus we figured out it would be cheaper to just buy one. Not to mention there aren't many power tools in our household so that would add to the cost of any DIY project. We actually ended up scoring a 180gal 1/2" thick glass tank for $60 from a shop in Batavia. Man is that thing heavy. The next time we move we won't have any volunteers to help w/ that as the last time we moved all our friends ended up in pain even though we used those suctions for installing glass windows... I WILL, however, do a little DIY to make that 180 hold water again if that Tegu ever moves out of it.... shh, I said nothing.
Looking at that tank in the auction I can't even figure out where there's a seam in the acrylic as the ends are both rounded. Maybe behind the overflow? I can't even imagine how much money went into the stand alone to be able to support a 900 gallon tank and look good to boot.
And yeah, if I did have $14,000 I'd probably use it as a downpay on my own home right about now.
i think kent built his 450 gal tank. 96"x36"x30". for around $800. it is made of plywood, oak, and three panes of glass. you would need quite a few tools.
Very extraordinary tank Kent! It's got to be very rewarding to look at that tank knowing that you spent a lot of time and energy creating something very unique.
Chya, mine would prolly look like a bathroom commodity. We've considered a few times buying a tub or a shower shell and coverting to an enclosure for one of our tegu lizards simply because of how easily we could run plumbing for a water feature without worrying about leaks... they don't build lizard tanks the same as aquariums. I just get horrified when I picture how it would look in our house so I keep postponing the hubby's dreams. He'll pull a fast one on me one of these days yet... and then that's when he'll owe me the 180 gallon oceanic reef ready that I'm saving the overflows for... think I'll take him to Home Depot tomorrow. That Tegu will find a new home yet...
