I've been stumped lately on what to add to my 50 gallon reefish tank. I'm looking at bang-for-the-buck fish, that are active and colorful.

Current inhabitants:
2 occelaris clowns
1 coral beauty angel

Future additions?:

~1 bangaii + bicolor blenny + six line wrass

~1 or 2 bangaii (are they more reclusive singularly?) + 2 fire fish (too intimidated by coral beauty?)

~3 chromis

Filtration isnt a problem as i have 60lbs LR, 50 lbs LS, 30 gallon sump/fuge with skimmer. It's more of a space/hapiness issue.

I would also go with a 6-line and royal gramma plus a midas blenny. I have a royal gramma and 6-line wrasse and I lost my favorite fish last week. I removed all my rock out to clean off the bubble algea and catch and trade in 4 fish and found the midas in my kitchen sink after I was done.:furious:

If you can get a firefish pair, I'd go for that. But two random firefish is likely to result in just one firefish. Not a fan of bangaii's. Besides that they are nocturnal or crepuscular, I read the other day that they go after pods. Which is why I personally would pass on the 6 line. The royal gramma is a nice choice for the dollar.

I'd consider something that lives on the sand like a red banded high fin goby and commensal shrimp and possibly a a rock percher like one of the combtooth blennies

i was delberating between the royal gramma and bicolor blenny. After tedious amounts of watching the behaviour of both, i prefer the royal as it does not perch. The yellow wrasse is very nice, how deep of a sandbed are we talking?

The canary wrasse is a beautiful addition. You need just enough for it to cover itself at night to sleep. Maybe an inch of sand.

The royal gramma is a pretty fish too!

well, i picked up a small maybe 1.25" bangaii today, as they are nocturnal his cruising the tank and scoping out his digs before the lights go on. The lights are out at 8pm, so i can still enkoy him/her. I'm getting sick of diatoms though. Will a sand-sifting goby help stir them up? Any suggestions for a neat one on the smaller side? I'm not a fan of sand-sifitng stars.

diatoms should go away on their own. How old is your tank?

I believe it is about 10-12 weeks, with all rock cured. The LFS was close and I got the rock home quick. Actually Haven't seen ammonia, nittrite or nitrate to date. Fingers crossed, but the 30 gallon sump is quite the helper. I actually run the skimmer pretty wet so it takes out a bit of salt, I just add some really strong mixed water down the overflow. I like it this way since trace elements are replenished here and there between WC's. I'm wondering as to how many firefish are good. 1 is skiddish, and 2 fight, are they better in odd numbers like chromis or what? Thanks guys/girls! Don't honestly know how I could have started so smoothly on my first SW tank without this forum.

Either a pair or a single. You need to either pair them yourself through trial and error in a separate tank or buy them already paired. In fish talk "paired" means a male and a female, not just two fish. Unfortunately there's no way that I know of to sex them. Since you are new, I would expect that your best option is to find a mated pair or just buy a single fish.

i almost feel as if one may be too shy with most of the tankmates... Perhaps if i added an adult specimen of 2"+?
