Illynasa snails.

I know some of you wanted some black mud snails (illynasa obsoleta). I will be going to get them on sunday june 4th, and will bring them to jax that afternoon. If anyone wants any, please let me know an estimate of how many. I wont be counting each snail, I just want to know how sore my back will be from picking up a ton of snails. These will be free btw.

They are reefsafe. I have had no problems with them bothering anything. They do crawl up the glass, but haven't had one ever make it out of the tank. The snails will fall of the glass long before making it to the top, then they are able to right themselves. They are similar to nassarious vibex (actually were considered nassarious until several years ago) snails in that the eat dead and decaying items on the sand bed. They do burrow into the sand and hang out until feeding time. Drop some brine shrimp or mysis shrimp, and they are like guided missles. I have heard they will eat algea and cyano, but cannot confirm or deny this from personal experience.

They are sold by people on ebay, as well as reeftopia.

Right now I am planning on doing a mass dropoff at robsreef sometime in the afternoon (providing he is willing to allow it :) ) I may be able to make a stop or two before that since low tide is at 9a.m.ish

I have hundreds of them in my 55g, but they are all itsy bitsy baby ones. Three of them might cover 1 zoo polyp. Not much of a meal for a puffer at the moment. When they get bigger, you're welcome to some of them.

I have been trying to find ceriths at stores for quite a while. I want the florida ceriths, not the mexican ceriths. Almost ready to break down and order some online.

My list so far,

ssweet1- some
s10willy- some
teach- 50 or so
ikaria- some
reefneck/reefneck widow - 4 or 5 hundred :p

I am looking at sunday around 3ish right now. I will update on saturday though.

paul, can you post a pic of the snail. I think I know what you are talking about. I get them at blackrock beach. BTW we all need to take a trip out there soon the WT is in the upper 70's. I also find fighting conchs there also

Kinda hard to take pics, but they are selling them all over ebay. I bet you have seen them over at blackrock beach.

Whenever you are ready to do a group trip, post it. I bet there is still interest in one. Hmmm, grill, ice cold beverages, beach.. What is there not to like?

These snails are from temperate waters of 15-20c. They do not last long (months) in a reef aquarium sitting at 25c or above.

Tell that to the snails in my tank. They seem to have forgotten to die. Just a little info on these, I find them in tide pools on the beach that are in direct sun with water temps of 90f and up, or for you, 32.2c and up. I do not debate that these are temperate snails, only that they do survive and thrive in water temps well above those that you posted. They have a population range in the us starting in the florida keys, north through at least north carolina. That is a broad range for a "temperate" snail. The main cause of death for the snails from my experience is starvation. People buy these by the hundreds, and do not increase their feeding so these scavengers will self regulate their numbers in our aquariums.
