I'm a grandpa! Kudas had fry (150+) Any opinions?

Well by now I probably recognized (by reading from seahorse.org), that I was not ready for this first brood. I gave most of my fry to a LFS who does hatched brine daily or so. I don't have that. So I decided to give this LFS some info from seahorse.org to prepare for the next brood.

However I do have a few left in the tank and wondered if I should let these guys die out, or if I should take them out of the tank as well and place them in a smaller aquarium.

Any opinions on that?

Also, whats with this airline tubing thing that prevents fry from going to the top of the tank? I know mine do that, they can't stay at the bottom. I wish they did though.

Any opinions on that???

THANKS!!!

If you aren't ready for fry but want to try it out some time, just wait for your next batch to come, it won't take long :)

I just got my first batch this morning of reidi fry which are similar in their needs when it comes to raising them.

Here is part of my nursery. You want the airlines into the sides of the bowls (in the setup I have) to create a circular motion and keep them from the surface of the water. So far, mine are doing pretty good.

LOL... uh huh! Our first brood of Reidi fry was 17, 14 days later -our 2nd brood- 35; our third brood (14 days later) 250, our 4th brood (13 days later... this past Friday) 350!

We have nurseries in the kitchen now! :)

Not sure about Kudas but Reidi babies eat live Rotifers for the first few days before they'll eat the live baby brine.

Maybe This link might help you.

Good luck!!

If you want to raise fry, setup the cultures of green water and pods now. Seahorsesource sells calonoid pods (sure I spelled that wrong) which are great.

Seawaterexress is currently selling 2mm to 4mm shrimp for a good food after BS.

IMO you should get everything ready and then try. Trying now would just be expensive, and most likely unsuccsessful. I don't mean to sound heartless, but raising fry is challenging. If you were not prepared before there arrival IMO there is little chance you will be succsessful. Better to wait until you are ready. You will have more fry soon.

Maybe if you get the Science Teacher job it could be part of a classroom experiment.

Heck yeah! I'm already planning on moving my current 55g tank to the classroom and buying a 180g tank for the house. I am getting qoutes from around my area. Its going to be fully loaded.

Here are pics of the Fry I gave to my LFS:

How old are the fry in the last picture? They look so big!! I have lost 75 of my reidi babies in the last few days, which really frustrates me as well as makes me sad. Looking at the pictures of yours, maybe mine were just premature, even though the gestation period was dead on.

I am going to try much harder next time.

skewch::: How big were they? 1/4" ?

I would say thats about right. Atleast some were 1/4 in, and many smaller than that. Is there any way I can ship fry to people across the country, who may have better luck with these guys?

waterbug, they were actually bigger than 1/4", about 1 cm (can't figure out what that is in imperial measurement) I was looking at the measuring tape, like an 1/8th over a 1/4 or so.

Same size as my 4 broods of babies. Tiny little things. As far as shipping them overnight... I personally would hate to chance it unless you have no other alternative.

When I drove my 1st bood out to a lady who lives 100 miles away; we mwt half way and I had them bagged, in green water and rotifers. They all survived the trip... but it was only a 2-hour trip.

Sad to say that I don't know (currently). I have been "giving" them away to a LFS who has brine shrimp hatching. This is my second brood....so I will probably "give" them away again. I say "give" becuz I usually get something in return of value from them.
