im am getting an octo....

i have my octo in a 55 gal with about 60-70 lbs of live rock and 2 canister filters. one is a magnum 350 and the other is a fluval 304. im sure this is over kill but i like to keep her well fed so id rather over filter than under. my lids are taped down and all holes are also securely plugged or taped. i wanted to set up a sump and protein skimmer on this tank but am worried about being able to octo-proof and overflow boxso i skipped it. as for lighing i have one 55watt actinic PC and one NO daylight bulb. i think this might be more than enough light but the octo doesnt seem to have a nocturnal schedual so im not too worried.
i keep the temp on the cool side (75 F ) to keep her metabolism down a bit. they are have short life spans as it is so keeping octos too warm only shortens it even more. i feed her crayfish and the ocassional feeder. she has also eaten all of the various snails that came on the live rock so a clean up crew is out of the question. :mad2: another good reason to keep light low. hope this answered some questions. if you have any more just ask. good luck.

mine was pretty good sized when i got her. she laid eggs probably 3 weeks after i got her which means she has another month or 2 tops.
good thing i paid wholesale!

feeders and crayfish only is a horrible diet for an octopus

they need saltwater animals to live

i feed mine emerald crabs and i got 600 snails off of ebay for $25 and thats including shipping.
and they are saltwater,

much much healtheir

and if you plan on keeping an octop without a skimmer,

i wouldnt doubt the octo will be short lived anyways

they MUST have a skimmer

considering she ate snails and crayfish, then laid eggs which are healthy, which hatched and are alive id say her diet was ok on the short term. she is now living out the rest of her days on a SHRIMP FARM where her babies will eat human grade marine shrimp and other various pods. also, with regular water changes, a 55 gallon with one octo a skimmer is optional as long as all water parameters are excellent.
