IM Fusion 20 Build

Hello everyone, this is my first post on RC and I wanted to share a little about myself and previous experience in the hobby first before pictures and info to my current build.

I got into the saltwater hobby thanks to my roommate who had a saltwater tank. I've always had freshwater random tanks when I was younger and wanted to make the step to get into the Saltwater life. Fast forward to late 2014 and i finally got into it. Started with a Chinese Box LED and a 29G tank with a canister filter.

Due to my obsessive personality, the hobby took over my life. I constantly was researching more into the hobby, buying stuff to build as close to my "Dream build" that I could afford. So eventually around march 2015 I built my 40G breeder DT with a custom stand and custom 40G breeder sump with skimmer/drain area, refuge, and return area. Ran a Omega Vertex 130, Neptune Apex, (2) Kessil 360WE, Etc. But after spending all the money and going through a rough time in my personal life i decided to part ways with it and my coral collection i had going only 3ish months later.

So its been about 8 months are so since my last tank and now that things have settled down and the itch for a tank is back i decided to take the plunge and picked up a IM Fusion 20 AIO tank from a member from my local reef club that i met while i was still in the hobby. Its going to go somewhat slow but I'm currently working 80+ hour weeks so I've got a little more money to spend on start up costs.

But here is where I'm currently at with this build;

-Tank: IM Fusion 20 AIO
-Stand: Better Homes and Gardens square 4-cube orgainzer($39 from walmart)
-Powerhead: MP10QD
-Rock work: Custom Jester6 Piece(don't have in possession yet)
-Substrate: Random sand from a buddy

Plans as of 2/11/2016;
- Upgrade return nozzles to spin stream nozzles
- Upgrade stock return pump to MJ1200
- Upgrade stock media baskets to CustomCaddy Media Trays
- IM Ghost skimmer or a Tunze 9002 Skimmer if i can make it fit.
- Radion Gen3/Gen3 Pro OR AI Hydra 52HD, depending on the best deal i can find for one of those.
- IM Desktop reactor OR BRS Mini-Reactor for Carbon or GFO if needed.

Random stuff like heater and temp gauge.

I'm doing this build to mainly keep zoas and LPS but want to be capable to make it an all out SPS tank if I wanted, so this build will be built to do so.

Thanks for checking out my first thread and i will make sure to update as more equipment and build comes!

Got everything up and running last night on my day off. All thanks to a buddy from the 916 Reef Group, he brought me my Jester6 rock work, tester frags and 15 gallons of his water change water. We did a record set up time of 15 minutes. Here are a few pictures I took before heading to bed to try and catch a few hours before waking up for work. These 7, 12 hour days plus commute are finally starting to catch up to me but I'm glad I got this tank up and running.

I'll make sure to update you guys more once I get some pictures with the lights on and it clears up. I'm typing this the next day after filling t up last night, and the Zoas are already opening up. I'm bummed about the stand, it doesn't fit my Plastic 5G ATO jug and I can't fit my DJ power strip in any proper direction. So it looks like I'm forced to get a Neptune Apex since the EB8 would fit perfectly and get a custom ATO resivor from a member in my 916 Reef Group sometime soon.

So the tank has been up for a month now and I've got some progress pictures to show you guys. I've added some livestock; Two snowflake clowns, a Yasha goby and pistol shrimp, a Leatuce Nudi from a buddy of mine along with more to my clean up crew.

I recently picked up more coral this past weekend from another buddy of mine from the 916 Reef Club Facebook page I've been apart of for over a year now. I got some Fairytale Zoa's, Lazor lemon Zoas, Blue Hornets, a few other nice Zoas frags. Also a killer Munmy Eye chalice from him, but this one has purple in it! It's on the eye. I also got my lucky hands on a TDF Tie Dye Jawbreaker Mushroom. It's about the size of a grain of rice, but it's got orange, yellow, red and even some tiny spots of green. I'll try and get another clear picture to get the colors in it. I'm really excited to see if grow and see what the babies look like.

The fish and coral are doing great, eating and healthy. I still have diatoms that come everyday with the light schedule. Recently had a minor macro/slime algae pop out of no where but after a week or so and increase in flow from my MP10 it's all looking better. The skimmer is pulling some good stuff and everything seems to be doing well. Only have done one 4 Gallon WC about a week ago. All the levels are great minus my Cal is at 390. So eventually I predict I'll be dosing once my coral load is needing it.

Got a few more frags from another member of my group I plan on picking up this weekend as well so stay tuned for pictures once they get settled in.

welcome to RC!
yeah looks look do you have a build thread on NR by chance looks really familiar. ha
anyway keep us posted we all like to see builds!

Got some more coral added to the tank this past week. Picked up some really nice looking no namer Zoas and albino Rhodactis mushrooms from a LFS in Fairfield, CA. Got a Cali Tori, Green Slimer, Bazooka Joe Chalice and Alien Anti Venom Zoa frag from a buddy off the 916 Reef Group Facebook page. And last but not least decided to take the risk and picked up a really nice looking Maxima Clam from YourReef in Roseville.

Got some more color in the tank and it's starting to come together. Going to start adding corals to the Rockwork once I get some I know I'll want to stay there. Need to fill the top up with sticks depending how those two do over these next few weeks.

These are those killer no namer's I got, going to be giving them a name since I can't seem to find any Zoas like these anywhere when I search them based on pattern and color. Any suggestions?

So the past few days some of the Zoas I've had for a few weeks that are usually open any time of day with or without the lights on have been closed up and not looking so good. Also my Yasha Goby was out of his hole acting weird when I got home for the first time yesterday. My clam also was looking as fluffy and extended as it normally does. Tested my water last night and it turns out I'm having an Ammonia spike. Levels are the follow: pH-8.3 / Ammonia-2ppm / Nitrites-0.3 / Nitrates-15.

I added some AmQuel Plus to help bind up the Ammonia. Going to do a 2-3 gallon WC when I get home after work to hopefully get rid of some of the higher ammonia.

What do you guys recommend in a case like this? Recently did a 4 Gallon WC two days ago, and cleaned my filter sock out for the first time in 2 weeks. Also I removed the ceramic media I had in the filter sock because it was so nasty with detritus. Haven't added anymore livestock minus coral, and no dead snails that I'm aware of. All the snails seems to be doing good.

Got home from work, everything looked great. Minus a few Zoa frags, the clam was fluffy again, SPS had polyp extension and most Zoa frags were open. I tested for ammonia and it's still at 2ppm. No nitrites though.

A few hours later some started closing up again and more torches retracted some and my little snowflake clown of two is lying down on the sand. So I'm hoping he makes it through this spike. Hopefully don't loose my tie dye jawbreaker or clam over this. Not sure what to do. I did a 3 gallon water change and added another dose of AmQuel Plus. Will update and test again tomorrow morning.

So sad to hear about your spike. I am so keen to put my fish in my tank as well. But haven't got any real spike yet. Phantom feeding now... Have you tried zeobak? It's like bacteria in a bottle. Can help stabilize your bacteria faster. Good luck! Looking forward to hearing more!

Things are better, I tested two days ago and still have traceable ammonia but things are looking happy again finally.

Left for a little 3 day vacation, hoping things aren't dead when I get back. Left my roommate in charge to keep an eye on the tank and I've got a 4 Gallon WC on stand by incase things start looking bad, he will do a quick 30%-40% WC for me.

Dude,
Your tank looks amazing. Sounds like you are doing all the right stuff. The only thing I am going to do is go slow. These little tanks are really sensitive. I threw some clean up crew in there and I'm waiting a few more weeks. About a month before I throw a fish or 2 in there. I have 1 damsel and a 30 gal. clean up crew, that's it for the first month after cycle, algae etc. Love your set up looks cool.

Thanks man I appreciate that.

Yeah these are sensitive setups for sure. I've read and heard plenty about how sensitive they are from this site and my buddies but until I started one myself I didn't know HOW sensitive they actually are. Taking it slow is the best advice for any reef tank, especially a nano. If your local we'll have to trade some stuff later on!

So when I got back from vacation the ammonia has dropped down to 0.8ppm from 2ppm. About 0.2ppm nitrites and roughly 10ppm nitrates. Don't understand the ammoni spike but everything survived and is now doing good.

Did some tank updates: changed out my GFO, replaced the filter sock with another custom caddy running filter floss on top and some ceramics in the rest. Also started using Kalkwasser to get up with my coral load in my ATO. Starting out with one TSP per 5 gallons. Will be testing tomorrow for KH/Cal/PH/Mg to see where about a days worth of kalk in my ATO has my levels at vs where they are after a fresh WC.

Once of my close friends is moving and getting out of the hobby for now so I got first dips on his coral and whatever else he had. Walked away with about 20 frags or so with a few mini colonies. Also a bengi Cardinal and a short spine urchin I sold him over a year ago! So it's cool to get it back in my tank after getting out of the hobby a while ago. Picked up some Seachem 2-part. So I'll see where my levels are after this kalk and start dosing acocordingly. The Leptos are ones I sold him when I got out a while ago along with some other pieces I got back which is awesome to have back.

Excited to see how the tank does now. It's stocked pretty good now. Not sold yet on the Rockwork due to the height which limits my growth on SPS and the shadowing from the main over hang. Thinking about trying to supplement two T5's on either side of my Radion to eliminate shadowing. Also thinking about running Bio-Pellets for simplicity and to try something new.

First time with an anemone, he is already walking around to find his new spot so hopefully it's out of the way. Enjoy some of these pictures, not all opened up. Touched a few coral while putting in the new frags so some are kinda sucked up and not open all the way.

Enjoy!

This looks awesome. I am thinking about downgrading my [leaky] 120 gallon that isn't even fully cycled yet to an IM fusion 40 gallon. I like the idea of not having a sump and just keeping a large ATO reservoir under the stand. Your success here is making me think the sumpless IM fusion setups are a good idea. Would you still recommend it over a setup that size with a sump?

Have you set up a refugium in any of the back compartments?

I just really like the sleek look of these tanks without pipes coming out all over the back.
