Ok so went to stick my hand in the tank and felt a shock..so unplugged everything and still felt it now when I shut off the lights it was gone....everything is plugged in atm except the mh..I just don't get how I'm getting shocked if there s no cables from the fixture in the fish tank..

Plugged it back in and out touched with my finger and again...what should I do..should I completely unplug all the cables that are plugged in

well, here's the deal.

when you said you shut everything off you still felt a shock, then you shut off the lights and it was gone.

So....you narrowed your problem down to the lights. Your lights are somehow getting stray current into the tank.

I was getting shocked by my cheap eBay LEDs that were mounted in the canopy. I guess salt over time provided a path to the tank. I used a little grounding probe from Amazon and no more shocks. Just make sure grounding probe is directly plugged into a wall outlet.

Ok thanks everyone so it is the lights...I googled ground probe for fish tank and came across a few do you have to stick the antenna in the tank..you guys think if I unplug everything and wipe it down I could fix the problem or is it pretty much a done deal

ground probe is a band-aid. You need to locate the source. If the light or ballast is getting current into the tank somehow that needs to be stopped/solved.

your devices most likely share a ground, sounds like the light is inducing a voltage on the ground. If you use a GFI circuit for the tank it should be tripping.

Ok so since its either the ballast or light my best bet is to probably get a new light set-up..the one I have now is oddysea mh and a few years old..just dint know what to do.I don't have a backup fixture

Absolutely correct. In my case the band-aid solved the issue, you may or may not get same results.
Yes, you would need to stick one end into the tank.

Will look into gfi circuit..right now they're all connected to a.m extension cord then to a time then to wall...just never had this issue.
