I'm starting to see green hair algae...

Hi everyone.
I was doing some maintainence today in my 10 gallon tank, and i'm starting to see some green hair algae appear on one of my large rocks in my tank.
Currently i don't have any fish, just corals, mini stars, 8 nass snails, and 2 hermit crabs (just added the snails/crabs about a week ago).
I do have a ball of cheato in the tank (its in a net tho - i know, a nitrate trap but I put it in the net so the cheato wouldn't be blowing all over the tank) to battle a little cyno outbreak i had a month or so ago.
I was wondering what would be good to put in a nano to help combat this problem before it takes over my tank? Its not a large patch of it, i'm thinking maybe the size of a quarter to half dollar or so on a piece of rock the size of a football. The rock is pourous, and it looks like its coming out of the crevices in the rock. The rock has most of my zoos attached to it, so taking it out of the tank would be out of the question. I am currently setting up another 10 gallon that I drilled last week to house a 10 gallon sump/fuge under the tank. Do you guys think that once i get this setup and the cheato gets out of the netting its currently in, should I start to see the GHA disappear? I currently don't feed anything, so i'm not sure what is causing it to grow all of a sudden. Just looking for a quick solution (cleaner crew wise) before it gets a grip in my tank.
Thanks
Stewie

people are going to ask you so i mize well be the first. what type of water do you use??? if tap switch to ro/di water. how long have you had ur tank up??? i had this problem when i had my 12gal nano. and it was the demise of the tank. you must have some export nutrients it is just a matter of finding what it is.

Turbo snails are excellent as long as the growth isn't too long. In a ten gallon, even two of them should be a huge help.

As stated, ro water is your best bet.

Since you have no fish, feeding should be zero. Oops. you said you don't feed.

Could be detritus built up in the pores/holes in the rock from poor curing or circulation. Hair algae is also bad because it traps more detritus in the effected areas, feeding itself in essence.

With turbos, and cheato in the sump, you should have it under control quickly.

Good luck! :)

Ah yes, the what kind of water..
Well i don't have ro/di but i do use the walmart distilled water.
I have 2 pumps in the tank going.. could have been beacuse of lower flow. Detrius does build up on my dsb, so i'm looking for something that helps along those lines without having to use a cucumber.
Tank has been setup for around 8 months now. I had been using a lee's skimmer, then went skimmerless and for christmas I got a fission nano skimmer. Pulling light green skimmate.. better than going skimmerless i'd say. Well, i guess i'll try a turbo or two. And no, its not long and wavy yet, its just short stubby, bristley patches here and there.
Thanks
Stewie
