Im thinking of mounting my wavebox on the outside of my tank.

Hello guys,
Im thinking of mounting my wavebox on the outer right side of my tank. I would get some 1/4in glass parts and build a small outer box like a external overflow with a hole right infront of the outlet of the wavebox. The wavebox itself would be mounted snug upto the hole and would be removable for cleaning.

I guess my main question is if it will still get a nice wave being on the outside? Is there reason that it would not work being on the outside?

Here is a pic of the so you can get a idea of the layout. In the pic the wavebox is on the inside right where I would mount it. I just really hate the idea of this large box in there.

I am working on my new custom 480g with 4 external waveboxes. But my tank is acrylic tho. I DON'T think it is a good idea to do 1/4" glass box on a glass tank as you know silicone don't bond too well.

It will work just like a regular intank wavebox as long as you are able to remove the pump and clean them every 4-6 months.

The tank has silicone holding all the joints together. I have seen many DIYs around the boards that have glass overflows that have only silicone holding them on.

Out of everything I would question about doing this, that isn't even on the radar.

I've got a DIY external overflow, the glass box was easy to do and I don't worry about it one bit. Make sure you use glass at least as thick as the tank since it will be holding a bit of pressure with the waves going back and forth. Might want to use some extra supports as well (90 degree triangles positioned at the bottom of the box).

I have wanted to do the same thing you are talking about, so I would really like to hear some other opinions on this as well.

Bob
