In BioCube Hell, Assistance Appreciated

I'd call it the new cycle. Just pretend that this is day one. Assume you won't add any fish for six weeks.
Sounds good

Also, some of the corals that are sold as yellow polyps contain palytoxin. You'll want to be teaching your kid appropriate safety precautions when she helps with the tank. And be careful about stuff like pulling the rock out of the water and bashing it with a hammer, they can squirt in your eye and put you in the ER.
She's 6, she's doesn't use any of the chemicals, or reaches into the tank (can't reach), she just helps mom feed, and stands there going ohhhh ahhhh that fish is so pretty, it's name is star, star is dead, my heart hurts, etc.

I'm using a media basket with chemi pure elite, filter floss, and purigen. I have a tunze 9001 for a skimmer but I question its efficiency since it is very water level dependent. I don't see nitrates at all and parameters are real stable. Be careful not to ignore flow in the tank. That was the key for me when I added an MP10 I saw a cloud of detritus come off the rocks and the tank has been great ever since.
my media basket second level was going to have purigen in, but the store was all out, so they recommended trying chemi-pure(or blue, can't remember now) instead, and said I wouldn't need both that and chemi-pure elite. In a few months when I change that, I will be doing the same as you did.

The tank currently only uses the pump that came with it, for flow. I didn't think such a small tank would need more then that.

I run both even though it is prob overkill. With my setup I use elite because it has GFO for phosphate removal as well as the carbon. If you start growing chaeto that should remove phosphates as well.

i'm gonna go along with those who suggest your tank wasn't finishing cycling before you added the fish.

also, hold off on an urchin for a couple of months. they need some algae on your rocks to sustain them.

First off let me say you should check out the nano section. Plenty of us with biocubes, and build threads. Have a read through a couple and you'll quickly learn what works and what doesn't.

Now let me address the above quote. In my biocube I have 2 vortech mp10's and a hydor korralia nano, plus the return is split in 2 using locline products. Flow is very important in a reef tank, the more the merrier(usually).

Isn't the reason that most are running 2 MP10s in a biocube to prevent directional growth of SPS. I only say this because the OP has not stated anything beyond soft corals. I would think one nice pump in the tank would be plenty for that.

i of course agree with everyone on the cycle but i cant help but notice no one mentioned anything about the "lava rock" typically that is something people stay away from as lava rock contains trace metals that can corrode and leach poison into the water slowly over time. it does not do that in fresh water but will in salt. the reason its safe out in the ocean is that its go so much water volumn out there to dilute and pretty much just wash away anything that leaches out and in your tank there is no where for it to go.

You shouldn't add CUC if there is still nitrite and ammonia present. And you shouldn't add CUC and fishes at the same time because you'll have a mini cycle because your tanknis still maturing and it can't handle too much bioload

It took me 1 month to cycle and I've done some shortcuts already like buying Liverock that is seeded and using water from established tanks. Still the sand leached a few unwanted stuff so I waited for almost a month before adding my CUC and waited for a week before adding one or two fish at a time.

And lava rocks do have some minerals in it that might leach in your aquarium. Remember water is the only thing that leaves in our tanks. All the minerals and other who knows stuff are just left and piling in the tank.

Doing more water changes will somehow save the other fishes and corals.

And Slow down! Rushing in this hobby will only make you lose more.

I guess I should have mentioned when I added my critters originally, before the fish, there was no nitrite or ammonia present.

That's partially correct. When some green slime started appearing everywhere, after the urchin died, I added some turbo snails (still doing an awesome job) on feb 22. But on feb 8th, the original cuc was added and at that time, all parameters were safe. It wasn't until after the urchin died that things started getting wonky. Then worse after the rock adjustments. I guess my detailed and dated OP wasn't as clear as i thought it was.

March 5th update while I'm here.

The CUC has been doing a great job along with the media basket I installed. Still got some green on the base rock but I think that's because of lack of flow. Probably going to LFS today to pick up a turbine. Parameters are far better, as tested yesterday.

Thanks for the info thus far.

Only the two fish and the urchin died. Currently 2 turbo snails, cleaner shrimp, and all the small snails and crabs are still alive. As is the two corals, though they haven't been opening the last couple days so I am guessing they aren't happy.

If you are getting this stuff from a LFS then those employees must get a commission .

Urchins, if the tank isn't established need to have a food source supplemented to them. Not enough for them to live off of in a new tank.

You said you had a Red crab ( was it a scarlett) they get big and would most likely kill the other crabs. THey don't grow fast though. Just give them plenty of spare shells. I cycled some in a bucket from beach vacations and put them in mine.

BEWARE of Green star polyps My mother loves that crap and it it took over an entire rock in my tank. Drives me nuts. Keep it separate if you don't want it to take over.
That sucks that this is your experience so far. I hope your daughter isn't to upset. I would just let it sit a bit with nothing added to it.
Don't quote me on this but I believe the protein skimmer adds oxygen to the tank, not sure if thats true or not.
For that skimmer though, the biocube one, I took the wooden air thing out and replaced it with a 75 cent air bubble stone and upgraded the air pump and my gets great skim.

Best of luck. keep us posted :)
