In need of pumps ( 2 powerheads died ! )

Went into the tank today to clean up the protein skimmer and found 2 of my AC 402s are toast. I cleaned the mags , props still look good , even tried a differant light plug still nothing. Worse yet I dont run a sump just a berlin method of LR and Water movment.

I looked at the tank last night and everything seemed fine, just dont know what happened. I do know they were way under powered for a 100 gallon tank at out of the box 250gph.

I know there are people like me that have surplus sitting in the garage or under the tank and with Xmas here just dont have the funding to run out and spend 200 bucks on new pumps.

Right now I only have my 1 402 running and my CA 1400 i won at the last meets raffle ( thanking the fishes gawds) running the protein skimmer .

If anyone has some PH laying around collecting dust please let me know !! I will happly drive out tonight where ever so the tank can get back up and running.

Do have a few bucks to spare and some smaller PHs like nano size Rios and CAs

I can lend you a couple of MaxiJet 1200's. Give you time to find replacements. I could bring them to work tomorrow, I work in carmichael. LMK

I put all the powerheads in the tank ( 4 x 200 GPH ) + the 402 Hopefully this will last until I can find someone with a wholesale connection at CA in sac.

While calling around today i was SHOCKED at the markup local stores that do carry them.

Exampe = CA 2300 Needle wheel PH wholesales from CA at 26.00
Markup average at 3 stores 59.00 !!!!

I am all in understanding businesses need to mark things up so they can make a profit but over 100 % is just gouging !

Anyways off rant for now , but anyone have a WS connect @ CA please let me know. Did find a guy on ebay selling some CA ones but will not allow for local pick up for some reason and no discount for local shipping either ( 14.00 to ship 1 powerhead across town. )

I have a modded mj 1200 if you're interested $25. I never use it in the main tank as I've decided to get tunze nano. So I only use it to mix new salt water.

That guy on ebay is the guy or at least the connect ;)

Btw, just think of the shipping gas and headache money. You get a nice package waiting at your door and get saved the expense of screaming at the top of your lungs the the 5 or 6 people who would cut you off in traffic on your way there ! Thats how I rationalized it:D

Catalina Aquarium has a website...

they also have a offbranch website called aquauniverse which basically is the same thing also petsupplyliquidator.com...

Just call the number on catalinaaquarium.com i think it's 916-381-3551 and speak to Jim...

or Jim's son Colton...they were great help to me

I have a lifted 2500 Avalanche on 35"s and a Emergency airhorn that

Thanks for the info though.

35" tires on 18" rims lol that would be a crazy rim though.

Misses ya Loup at yourreef , let me know when you are going to be back there again so we can hook up and I can get that.

I think I have come to the conclusion that instead of spending so much money on PHs I need to get a large pump and make a HO CLS which i could have made twice over now with the money i have spent on PHs.

I was at the SEMA show in Las Vegas last month and saw a couple of cars with 30" rims on them...........

To me the whole rim thing has gotten out of hand, rim and tire combinations need to be selected based on the car, the size of the car and just enough proportion wheel/tire to fill the wheel weel and not have too much tire, but fit the size of a car. For instance 20" rims look good on like the Chrysler 300, but obsene on a smaller car like a first gen camaro, which with 17" push the limit. (mine had 16" and thought looked perfect) On the flip side, trucks look good with a smallest of 17" rims.......Its kinda like putting a jacket on yourself 10 times too big, sometimes bigger ain't better in cars......engines sure. But i am hoping this oversized wheel thing fades like minitrucks, and those stupid rims sticking out from the fenders, (is called tubbing guys)

As mentioned I am a ME major. I got into it originally because I grew up around cars and hotrods....in fact was probably born too late, because I won't look at anything after '70 and think a '56 is the best tri-five and would rather have a '37 Ford, or a '29 model A, over a newer car as my "toy" any day of the week.......but its perhaps because I grew up in the garage and one of my earliest memories is sanding a '72 stepside chevy tailgate.

I got into reefing because I moved to Sac and into apartment living. So I didn't go crazy I needed a long winded, time comsuming, ever changing hobby as building cars. Spend two years building a car, is about like waiting for you corals to grow in....takes a lot of time, money and patience.

This was my other money pit that I had planned to keep, but rational thinking to continue my education prevailed.....I figure when I graduate in May I can always build another. I have plans for a wicked '56 Chevy Bel Air

Dude, I would take the money you spend on catalina pumps, and buy some QUALITY pumps that will last you longer. CA pumps have a bad track record.

I have noticed that PH's have gone up from 9 months ago. When i got into the hobby my rio pumps were like 10-15$ less then where they are now.

well the light fixture was okay but the pump is like a seio i think...You cant put them on wavemakers and sometimes when there is a power outage they won't start up...

I have one that I have not had the time to exchange with Colton that when I plug it in shorts out the whole circuit so i have to run all the way outside to switch the circuit breaker back again...

Good thing I know it's just this pump...

But my other two CA pumps do well and turn on and off just as my RIo 2500 pump does...

By the way is the RIO problem with only the older 2500 models or with the newer ones... I wonder if they fixed the problem yet...

anyways CA probalby just as good and if they are broken just tell Colton or Jim to help you out...They normally are good with custmer service...and if you want to pick it up they are at that old army depot on power inn rd...

Just ask them for local pickup...

I gone there at least 2-3 times now and no problem...

I wnated to buy a skimmer from them and asked for local pick up, they told me no way. They wanted me to pay 25 bucks to ship it 5 miles from my house. So I dont believe in local pick up.

And Ive read there ebay feedbacks, when someone say something negative they start name calling, Not my idea of customer service.

CA pumps are cheap knock off of better pumps. There is no way you can compare CA pumps to A rio or MJ.

They may be great for a mixing pump, But I wouldnt use them in my tank on a 24/7 basis.

That's wierd, Ive been out there quite a few times myself. Was treated very nicely as well and even shown around the place which was cool. Ive been using there pumps in my tank for the past 4 years 24/7. One of which finally froze up this year, but 3.5 years for a pump that was 30 bucks, I got what I paid for :)

From what Ive read about the horror stories regarding Rio was it was there 2100 models and higher that would leak the lubricants, not sure if they fixed it but I think they have IIRC, IMO maxijet's in a class of it's own Ive not heard any problems about them at all.
