In Praise of Vortech

I am in constant pursuit of improving my system. Unfortunately, my bank account reflects this goal all to well. My most recent addition was a Vortech MP60 pump. I have a 325 Reef Tank (400 gal system). My other circulation pumps are two read dragon 3100s and 2 Tunzes 6200s. Even with this flow, I felt I needed more. I discovered, with pleasure, I was right. The MP60 has greatly improved my system. The flow around the rocks has improved, keeping them much cleaner. Great PE extension plus the fish just love it. The fish are more active and seem to display a more natural behavior. I would guess that the vortech produces a more "natural" flow pattern. The pump is extremely well made and designed. It is very pricey, but it is worth it IMO. Some reefers have amazing "low" tech tanks. My hat is off to them. I seem to rely more on a "higher" tech approach. Thankfully, so far, my tech improvements continue to yield an improved system.

I've owned an MP40 for my 90 gal. for over a year now and have no complaints. I'm always interested in what mode other Vortech owners use. What mode do you prefer?

I agree! I have 2 MP40's on my 125 and my coral\sps growth has never been better. I usually keep mine on reefcrest at 70-80%

I use Lagoon mode and love it. I have an MP20 supplementing my closed loop. Immediately after I installed it, ALL my livestock looked happier. Even the fish.

The "noise" is the only complaint I have with the Vortech. My whole system is crazy quiet (Herbie drain, Red Dragon Pumps, Bubble King skimmer), the Mp20 is the loudest thing on the tank.

I have an MP40 and an MP10 on a 70G Cube. I run them on Reef Crest Anti-sync. As far as noise I run them at 100% and you can hear them when they rev up to 100%.....kind of a low hummm not bothersome to me and the tank is in the Family Room.

+1 on the mp40. Love what its done to eliminate deadspots in my 65g mixed reef. Had a closed loop and two tunze powerheads. One mp40 was able to allow me to remove the closed loop and one powerhead and still have better flow. I switch between reefrest and nutrient transport modes. Love my MP40. now thinking about adding a mp10 and replacing the tunze.

I've run 2 mp40w's on my 75 gallon reef full power since 2007 with awesome results. I've always run short pulse wave mode, awesome acro growth.
