In Progress: Sumpless 55g Tank

Exactly! They are very tall! I was just playing around with some ideas and I'll get a much better one when I get the rock home to my house and I'm able to set some up in the tank. I'm getting very anxious!

Hey guys,

Well i thought i would come back and post an updated pic of the tank as its coming along. As some of you guys remember, my setup was sumpless and only using tap water. No filtered water.

If you look back on my April post you will see that all the corals were small, I say its definitely coming along. Last month i removed the Chalice as it has grown 10x its size and cutting half the chalice every couple months was getting tiresome. So i took it off and rehomed it. I've also trimmed my corals countless times as well.

The first pic will be of the picture i uploaded on here in April which would be page 5, following the first pic will then be pics i took this weekend.

Looking good. What happened with your lights?

Update on my 56. Just got my aquamaxx HOB skimmer. I love it, but there is an issue. It wont fit over the lip of the 56. I may build a little shim, or possibly cut the lip. I'm going to ask Marine Depot if they know of a better fix. I'll post up pics later today. Super simple to set up and it runs great. It's already out performing my old slimmer!

If it doesn't fit over by just a tad bit, instead of cutting try shaving a bit off the edge of the lip. Just make sure to cover the tank well so dust doesn't fall into the water. A simple dremel should get you squared away.

Yeah, that's a good idea. It's literally just a shave away! :p I was thinking of buying a shallow plastic tray to catch the dust when I cut. Should work for shaving too. Thanks.

yeah for sure. or you can run some painters tape under the trim, cut some grocery bags open so you can fully extend and cover the open water surface area. I've use this method to cover the wife acrylic 100 gal column tank to sand and polish the wide center brace it had for better light penetration. worked like a charm.

with a dremel and a sanding wheel should make this shaving really quick. If you don't have a dremel you can either pick one up at harbor freight for cheap or you can use your drill and pick up a dremel kit from harbor freight or auto parts store or home depo for really cheap.

Finally got water sand and rock in the tank tonight. Still a little cloudy but I'll try and get some pictures out soon. Time to add a shrimp and get this cycle going!! How do you attach more than one pic to a post?

Outstanding.

I use photbucket. I have no idea about how to post pics here.

Got all my gear to grind the tank lip. I'm going to drain a waterchanges worth of tank water out to help with catching debris. Making water tonight and grinding tomorrow.

Nice! That looks great. I love the aquascape. My biggest regret and my next big project is getting my rocks off the back glass. It's a hassle to clean, and there are some dead spots back there I need to address. I love the way you achieved that, and still used to height of the tank.

Thanks!! I love it as well only 5 aqua scapes later haha!! Unfortunately my rocks are on the back glass. I figured I would left coralline grow where I could scrub lol so I guess I'll see how it goes. My Ammonia is up to .04 so here we go!

Just read through this thread, and there seems to be quite a few nice looking builds shown here. I really like the dimensions on that tank btw, I never thought to go with one. You normally hear 55g tank and run away due to horrible dimensions. Ill be checking in.
