Inaccurately rated Overflow?

Aren't overflow boxes always supposed to effectively surface skim up to their rated maximum flow rate?

Because this overflow box I have been running for well over a year now is supposed to be rated for 1200 liters per hour, but stops surface skimming already around half the flow rate.

And when I have a return pump flow rate of around 1100 liters an hour I end up with a a water level 2" above the lip of the overflow.

So right now I removed one of my return pumps and am now running with only 480 liters an hour flowrate which seems to work best as far as removing surface scum is concerned.

So yeah, am I just misunderstanding things or is it a poorly designed or rated overflow box?

I would assume the manufacturer could care less about the efficiency of the surface skimming and rated the box at (or even above) what it could handle in terms of raw flow in best conditions.... it is called marketing :)

Could also be your plumbing under it. If its a long run or 90's involved it will slow it down substantially. I believe the flow rate is most likely hyped up but they prob make the claims based on a strait shot, sump input directly under the overflow IMO.

I actually have a straight shot down to the fuge, so no obstructions of any kind.
Ah well, as long as it works i suppose, just wanted to be sure I'm not crazy.
Guess that frees up one of my return pumps for other use.

Proof that they knew what they were claiming was false. :)

Talk about a long shot.

Couldn't we just ask them to prove it or we buy a different brand?

I just don't see how people can stay in business for long. Eventually the customers will know it doesn't do what they claim.

Why not be honest, and people will trust them and their products. If that certain model doesn't flow enough, just upgrade to the next model.

After all, they would make a little extra $ and the customer would be happy.

Ciscokid...

CISCO is one the largest offendrs in the game. Most of their products are bug riddled crap that does not work as advertised... I deal with the nightmare every day.

First off, I admire your work in the hobby. I could probably spend days asking you questions...

If you are referring to the Cisco networking equipment at walmart.... I agree. This is actually still Linksys but they can put a bigger company name on their product. What specific products are you referring to?

I find many bugs in their firmware the company fails to acknowledge, unless i talk to someone very high up.

I don't recommend or use the "Cisco" made by Linksys anymore. Just the higher end stuff $1,500 - $10,000.

In my experience, last time i found an issue with a router or switch, Cisco had it solved next day!

Thanks for the kinds words :) I like answering questions!

We can certainly take the Cisco topic to an appropriate forum, but I will toss my two cents out there.

The "linksys" stuff and mentality is migrating upward in the Cisco product line while the top heavy aircraft carrier (cisco) is unable to adapt to what actual small business needs. Yes, at certain levels with certain products the TAC is very adept at solving issues. At the same time Cisco has always been a PITA. Switches that don't play well with others, VoIP that is the worst in the industry, blatant disregard for standards, etc. I used be a kool-aid drinker :) Interesting topic for another forum!

darkiss, most sponsors here and etail reef stores sell HOB overflow boxes. Though I think you will find that most experienced reefers will advocate drilling instead of using an HOB.
