What's the difference between the True Percs from Indo-Pacific, Papua New Guinea, and Solomon Islands?
Thanks for the help.
Their home address? Really there is no difference that I can tell. I have heard some say the ones from here have more black, ones from there have a deeper orange....blah, blah.
I have seen large groups of clowns imported from all those places. You will see onyx patterned percs from all three, and you will see deep orange percs from all three, you will see yellowish percs from all three. One week a group will come in with a lot of black, two weeks later the same collector will send a group with almost no black at all.
I would not buy percs from Live Aquaria. They get their fish from one of the only wholesalers that charges a premium for onyx colored percs. Marine Depot sells single percs for $23. That is about what they go for anywhere, maybe a little cheaper. I still wouldn't buy percs sight unseen though. I would never buy a pair of clowns for more than the cost of two unpaired clowns unless they are Maroons or they are a known breeding pair from a private party. 90% of the time "pairs" are simply two clowns that may or may not have been from the same anemone, that happen to get along together in the shippers tanks. If you buy two clowns of different sizes and put them in the tank at the same time, they will almost always bond to form a pair. Maroons are the exception.
Your best bet is to be patient and wait until one of the LFSs around you get some in. Your wallet will be much happier and you can watch them in the LFS for a couple days before you buy them to make sure they don't have brookynella. A large percentage of WC percs will die of brook within the first week they are at the LFS or if they are shipped to you, in your tank.
Jeff's in Costa Mesa gets them shipped directly for a reasonable price. Oscar's (formerly Jeff's) in Gardena is likely to be a good place to call. If they don't have them right now, they can probably get some for you within a week. Be specific on the coloring you want because it is very variable even among clowns that are imported in the same batch. I know for a fact that at least one of the wholesalers in L.A. has a large batch of WC percs at reasonable prices.
