So I've been combing the site/web for all of the information I can get on pistol shrimp but still have some questions.
I just bought one the other day from my LFS and it is a fairly large (~2 inches) species that most closely resembles an Alpheus Armatus. I have read contradicting reports on where this species originates from or it is possible that it is found in multiple locations. Some say it is a Caribbean/western Atlantic species, while others say its common name is the 'Japanese Snaping Shrimp' and that it can be found in the Pacific.
I live in Germany and the only other species of pistol shrimp I have ever seen at any fish store I have been to here have been the common Randall's (candy-cane) pistol shrimp and the Tiger Pistol Shrimp. To the best of my knowledge, my LFS does all of its business with Pacific suppliers so I'm pretty confident that my shrimp is not from the Carib/W. Atlantic.
From what I've gathered on the site, everyone seems to have a different experience with their pistol shrimps. Some say they are docile and harm nothing, others say that they will destroy CUC and other small ornamental shrimp. In particular I have seen several threads documenting the aggression of the species that I have, A. Armatus. Mine certainly has the characterstic "swirls" on the side of its body and the light blue legs (will post a picture if I get the chance/can find him out of his burrow). Mine is also a pregnant female with a clutch of eggs attached to her ventral abdomen.
Anyone have any good info on the A. Armatus or recommendations on where I can go to learn about them? Any help is appreciated, thanks.
