Info on wet dry trickle filter

What questions do you have? Back in the 1980s and 1990s I ran a homemade wet dry filter. IMO, they are not very good for reef tanks and they are nitrate factories.

isn’t every biological filtration system no3- factory To some extent. Except for zeolite
Somewhat, but a more natural system live rock, sand, macroalgae/refugium kind of balance each other out.

Trickle or wet/dry filters (if memory serves) came about in the 1980s. Back then (at least in my area) we encouraged hair algae growth:rolleyes: Trickle filters are like filtration on steroids. They very, very quickly convert ammonia to nitrite and then to nitrate. But, that's just my experience/opinion.

Want some other long time hobbyist's thoughts on these filters, let's as @PaulB @Timfish and @wvned

Those were gone and dead when I started. I am of the no filter camp. I just run a skimmer and reactors to modify water chemistry like a sulfur reactor.

Started using them in 1991 and I will admit it I still do. Not for biological reasons but I like the dripping of the water and the filter plate for mechanical filtration since I normally have a bunch of fish per tank. The following pictures are from the last 25 years. Hard find a digital camera back in the 90's and yes I am old and very slow to change

Looks gorgeous. If that's with a trickle filter, then I'd say they work fine. When I started, people were shifting away from wet/dry towards Berlin with skimming so I never ran one.

It is just a media to aerobic grow bacteria, it is not really a nitrate factory. I mean Griss is not wrong though.

A trickle filter mainly grows aerobic bacteria (air loving bacteria) Which is the side of the nitrogen cycle that creates nitrate.
There is no anaerobic bacteria which break down nitrate (live in areas with no oxygen) So this does not exist because trickle filter obviously add oxygen to the water.

So really a trickle filter is only one half of the denitrification cycle. The other side can be added through sand bed, live rock, sand filters, media, nitrate filters etc.

In a reef they should never be a issue.

If not maintained and allowed to get choked full of detritus that can be bad especially in the day of DLS rolls. Yea I remember that. My first two reefs were kept with Trickle filters.

This was also back when nitrate was considered really bad even small amounts.

After the last few weeks I am ready to go back to the simplicity of 0lder reefs.

lol, I had completely forgotten about DLS rolls.

Yea I am at that age where I can Remember every phone call with John Tullock or Albert Thiel when in my 20's. I remember every conversation or event with Ron Shimek or Eric Borneman while drinking heavily, what was that in my upper 30's or 40's maybe but I can not remember something someone told me yesterday or even what I did yesterday.

What is are DLS rolls???
DLS was a media used in trickle/wet dry filters way back when. DLS (Double Layered Spiral) refers to a type of filter media, often used in trickle filters, that provides a high surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize and perform biological filtration.

Here's an old article by Bob Goemens about these type of filters and metions DLS.

I detest any kind of daily or weekly filter I have to ride herd on. The only one I have is a sed filter I change monthly in front of the sulfur reactors.
