Initial Calcium Reactor Setup

I finally setup my reactor. It looks good and I hope works well too! It is a Reef Octopus CR-140. The JBJ regulator you all convinced me to get was soooo easy to set. I'd recommend it to anyone.

I have a couple of questions though. I am using Gen-X media, large grain stuff. Anyone else using it and how do you like it? Where is your controller set?

How much of a difference did it make on your SPS growth?

Sorry Howard had to mess with you I have mine set at 6.6 you need to run it lower then arm to desolve better. My sps grows like weeds no that I have a reactor.

I was just curious about the media dissolving. I read on Melev's site that he sets his controller a bit lower with the large grain media.

All in all the thing seems to be running well, I think!?!!

Sweet howie, I wanted to get that Octopus one but was talked out of it. I'd like to see how well it works. I think it would be a very good one. I keep mine set @ 6.5 and I'm using the Carbisea brand. I've noticed my 2 clams took off as did a number of other corals.

Melev and Lunchbucket, a couple of RC members, use the large grain stuff and lunchbucket said he's used the Gen-X media for quite awhile.

However they both mentioned that they set their Ph controller's a bit lower, about 6.4, for disolving the media more effectively.

This is a Stooopid question, is there anything to worry about besides Ca and Alk levels with a reactor?

Have you tested your effluent alk? How many ml's/minute are you running, how many bubbles per minute? What is your baseline calcium/alk in the tank? How often are you checking those numbers?

Theirs no stupid question in this hobby howie and you should know that. Yes their is though, keep and eye on your tanks PH. I have 2 PH controler's one for the reactor and one for the tank. And like Nook said watch what your reactor is doing to much efflute drip & vise virsa everything can go out of wack.

About 3 bubbles per minute, and a bit less than 50ml per minute. Eff alk is about 20 dkh. How do you accurately test? I know the salifert goes up to 16dkh, but when checking for the higher lvls, what do you do?

Tank is at 9.9dkh right now and Ca is a bit low at 390
