Insane Golden Puffer!

OK.....so I have a foot long Golden Puffer that is driving me crazy! I posted here cause it seems like this forum gets way more people looking through it than the Aggressive forum. Anyways......EVERY TIME I walk into my room where the tank is he goes ballistic! The fish swims like mad at the front glass "begging" for food. Now Ive had other puffers do this, but this guys is huge and he creates a "tidal wave" in the tank and EVERY TIME a whole bunch of water spills out of the tank. I have tried to fit different peices of glass over the top but the water still splashes out EVERYWHERE on the floor. Its getting bad, and Im getting tired of drying up the floor.
This guy ONLY eats pellets, and as soon as I drop a few in he calms down. THis happens WHENEVER anyone walks into the room. Im kinda getting sick of it! WHat can I do!!! getting rid of the fish is out of the question. Hes the best looking golden Ive seen, but he is a pain!!!!

I'm sorry I don't have any advice for you but your post had me laughing my butt off. I used to have a spiny puffer that did the same thing. He was only 5" though so no tidal wave. He was like a pet. I really miss that fish. That was 20 years ago. Wow typing that makes me feel old lol. Anyway cute post. Hopefully someone will have some suggestions for you.

It will pobably only get worse befor it gts better. It sounds like your fish has you trained. He spazes and you toss pellets in to calm him down. Your going to have to retrain him taht you walking into the room doesn't always mean food. Stick to a very strict schedule and no snacks (except for those that are already eating the algae on the glass:D). To keep the splash to a minimum i would get a piece of Plexyglass and Duck tape it to the top of the tank. It ain't pretty but it will stay in place.
Then comes the battle of wills. It will also help if you get up and go do things in another room for a little while then come back to the room. Trigger his reaction so that more often, he sees you come in the room and not feed him.

Does he even eat like silversides, krill, or whole pieces of shrimp? If he does feed him that, maybe he's just starving. Once he get happy and full, it should make him calm down. I hope.

Nope! I feed other fish in the tank krill, mussel, cockle, etc.....HE ONLY EATS PELLETS. And he's fat! Not underweight at all!

Your going to have to rig up an automated feeding system and but a button to trigger it outside of the door. Before you open the door, push the button and it drops in some pellets. Problem solved.

You're a lucky guy my friend, do not complain and enjoy what is truly one of the most beautiful and full of personality fish out there!

I have a Stars & Stripes that does the EXACT same thing, but he's not near as big as your guy. He still does splash water on the floor occasionally, and he just plows over all my other fish to get to the food first. I dont' think there is much you can do! Maybe wear your raincoat when you go to feed him!

:D

I don't think that will solve his problem b/c the way he explains it it's EVERY time he walks in the room. Not just feeding time!

Try an auto feeder. and set it to feed while you are not in the room. This may retrain him into not thinking u=food

As a side a once had piranah that if the temp was up he went nuts.

sorry auto feeder was already suggested.
But at least your fish is happy to see you
My reef is a in wall so they get magicly feed from behind and they can't see me.
So when I come around into the room the are afraid of me and hide.
If I sneek into the room than they stay out.

I have thought about an automatic feeder, but I dont think he splashes cuz he's hungry. He does it whenever Im in the room. Trust me he's very well fed. I think he will do it no matter what.

The tank is literally right next to my bed, and as soon as the sun starts to fill my room in the morning he's up. I know this sounds weird but if the puffer even sees me move in my bed he starts to splash! I have to put the covers up over my head so he doesnt know Im there. This is one smart fish!

Maybe you could attach a piece of acrylic at or above the water line that would act as a baffle, keeping the water from splashing out?

you have to put up a pic of this!!!

the way I see it... you have two options...

1) lower the water level on you tank so that the water doesn't come out

2)Duct tape some type of top to you tank so that water won't come out...

good luck and thanks for the smiles...

I think the piece of acrylic simply laid over the top of your tank or the glass tank covers will solve your problem.

Or..... If you get say... a 500gal tank and put him in it....... :D

I lowered the water level an inch and a half. Seems to help. I am tring to get a hold of a camera to take pics so everyone can see.
