Insane's 180g Reef in just one day build

LOL. Yeah right. Kind of true in a way but not like a noob would do it. I have been out of the hobby for 3 years.

Long story short, but still kind of long, I bought my sisters 180g reef and most of what all was on it. I moved it 90 miles and had two 100g stock tanks set up and tied together with a 72" 2x400w SE MH+1x250w SE MH+2x96w PC actinics overhead. A magdrive 9.5 pumping water to the upper stock tank which had an overflow skimmer that drained to the lower stock tank. I had this set up and ready for a month before I did the move. Had a protein skimmer & heater in it as well.

She had a 6" DSB which did not have any hydrogen sulfide gas in it. I researched DSBs before attempting to move it. I think they are ugly in a DT so I didn't plan on setting it up the same way. I screened the 500lbs or so of sand and kept anything that was over 1/8" in size giving me a 2" SSB. Before I pulled that DSB I took off the top 1" and kept that in the holding tanks to put back in the DT on top of the sand I cleaned.

Once I got the 300+lbs of rock (I weighed it when moving it to the DT), some soft corals, an LPS and a few SPS in the holding tanks, I set up the DT with the sand and let another protein skimmer work on cleaning it along with an ATS/surge device. It sat that way for about a month. In the holding tanks there are no fish and only a few crabs that were in the LR.

A few days ago one of my old 400w MH magnetic ballasts decided to catch on fire. Luckily I was home when it happened but it has forced me to get everything into the DT sooner than planned. (Reef in one day) My light for the DT is a 72" 3x400w Belize and I wasn't about to rig it up over the stock tanks. So two days ago I moved almost all of the rock over after firing up a DIY sump for the first time with my Octopus Extreme 250, 800w heater and Rio HF32 return pump. I am using a CPR CS150 HOB overflow that can handle 1,600gph. They claim it has a 1 ½" bulkhead but it actually has a 2" bulkhead. Never buy one without buying the lid for it or you will regret it! Imagine a high powered toilet flushing constantly!

Originally I had planned on working on the aiptasia problem while the rock was in the stock tanks and I was using a propane torch to cook them as I saw them but now things have changed a bit. I wanted to kill as many as I could see then use peppermints in the DT once things had stabilized. Now I will use Joe's Juice on the big ones and then use peppermints to get the rest. I had no plans on adding any fish until I had the aiptasia under control and the water is ready. That is still the plan. My sis had about 1 aiptasia per pound of rock. She kind of let it get out of control.

The long ways down the road fish will be a small school of Heniochus Diphreutes (Schooling Bannerfish) along with a school of Apogon Leptacanthus (Threadfin Cardinalfish). I am still building my stock list and researching everything. Once fish stocking is complete and water chemistry balanced, then I will start adding corals. Mainly SPS with a few select LPS and no softies. I arranged my LR to have tons of swim throughs for large fish, ledges and overhangs. I have to create shaded spots to protect LPS from the 400w MH's. It is not my first time at the rodeo but it has been awhile.

In setting up the DT and adding the rock and other stuff I have been mixing the water between the stock tanks and the DT to equalize the chemistry. I had been keeping the SG and temps the same as well.

My spikes haven't been too bad since I kept all of the LR and sand submerged during the move from my sister's house. I really didn't want to throw this together as fast as I have over the past two days but I didn't want things to sit in the dark with only the PCs on it.

I didn't even get the chance to run my two dedicated electrical circuits to the tank yet so I now have 3 heavy duty extension cords running to the tank from three different rooms in the house. My lights and heater take quite a bit of power and I check my extension cords often to see if they are getting warm or not.

Even when you think that you have the best laid plans, leave it to Mr. Murphy to prove you wrong and change them. It is so frustrating to plan to take things at a snails pace then be forced to hurry up and do this and that. The best advice I give to anyone about reefing is to take things slow and then when it comes to me doing just that, it won't let me. I just have to modify my plans and try to keep as much of them as I can. At least I know now that nothing can make me add fish sooner than planned since I have no fish and will buy no fish until it is time. Now I have a floor covered in extension cords, ballasts, wires, timers and power strips since I wasn't ready to fire up the Belize on the DT. The ATO and Kalk stirrer are not set up either so now I have to top off manually. I think I will do the ATO first then mount the ballasts later.

I signed up. Sounds like a great build, I too want a 180 - maybe in the next year or two. I'll be watching to get some great ideas. All my great ideas are stolen  Keep us up with all the stories and pictures. I'm not too good with a camera either - so don't worry too much.

My quick job of aquascaping 300lbs of LR done in 2 hours. All of the base rock is supported by 2" and 3" sections of 4" PVC pipe so I do not have to worry about settling or from any future fish that like to burrow. Burying LR in a sand bed is a waste of money. I put down three pieces of rock on PVC on the bottom spaced apart then put a roof over it. Three solid points of contact is a good rule to follow when building a reef. If a piece can rock back and forth then it won't be stable. I like to stand some long pieces of rock on end to act as pillars, The big cave near center right has a pillar in front of it holding up the cave roof and is all open behind it. The cave roof is 16" above the sand bed. It is difficult to get good shots that show things well. I still have some tweaking to do before I will be satisfied but I have plenty of time. I have more small pieces of rock and some rubble to go in. It will be months before I get to the stage to begin adding any fish.
This FTS is with all 1,360watts of lights on.

One other thing about my build is that I have to protect things from my giant breed dogs. Having a 160lb to 200lb very clumsy dog run into a tank or sump can cause problems. My DT acts as a room divider with the sump sitting behind it. I put the sump on the bottom shelf of a double 55g steel stand with the stand sitting backwards so the steel legs protect the corners of the sump. The top shelf helps keep dog heads out of the sump. I caught one of them drinking out of one of the stock tanks that was holding the LR. Bad dog. I currently have 3 giants and one on the way that was just born in Belgium last week.

Nitrate Hate

Nitrate Hate

Oh poo. I tested the water in the new DT last night.

Ph 8.4
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 160

LOL. At least I know the biological filtration is working!

Since it has been 3 years since having a reef I had to do some quick reading to freshen up on nitrate reduction. I had sold off all of my books which were what I had used to learn reefing in the first place without the help of an online forum. I remembered the WC dilution thing but don't really want to flush that much new water. DSB, no way. Ugly and I just got rid of the original one & they take time to work. Denitrification chamber, expensive to start up and takes time to get established. Looked up AZ-N03. Looks good. Might try it if my first attempt at reduction doesn't work.

Settled on Smirnoff! I speed read the article and understood the dosages and schedule. I don't care how it works, just that it can work if done right. Since I basically have no livestock I am not risking much and I had the vodka and syringes on hand. Last night was the first dose based on water volume of 150g. As stated it is better to err on the side of caution when calculating water volume. 0.1ml of 80 proof vodka per 25g of volume which makes my dosage .6ml per day for 3 days. Then 1.2ml per day for the next 4 days. Then up 0.5ml to 1.7ml per day for the following week. If changes are not apparent during that week, up the dose per day 0.5ml to 2.2ml for the following week and each week thereafter until start of reduction is noticed. Then hold at the dosage when reduction is noticed. Easy cheezy. I also upped the skimming to wet as stated even though it has been putting out about as much as can be expected for not having much load in the tank to begin with.

My first reaction to the nitrate level was OMG! Then after thinking about it, it is not a big deal. I have nothing but time to straighten it out well before I put any livestock in the tank. All I have to do is try this method and wait to see what happens. I had seen the vodka dosing method but never really read up on it since I had never had that problem at this level before. This is a great opportunity for me to learn something new in the hobby that I will be able to implement myself plus be able to pass my results down to others.

I temporarily hooked up my ATO yesterday since I got tired of topping off multiple times a day. I lose about 6 gallons a day due to open top on the DT, open sump and my ATS that has a fan blowing in it whenever the lights are on in it. I don't even have my 6x3" fan unit hooked up yet. That will increase my water loss even more.

I recently dicovered that my ATS is an Inland ATS250. I was told it is a piece of reef keeping history. There was a patent war over these units which is why very very few people have one and also why the ATS industry was basically destroyed for retail sales. The fight was ugly and very stupid. It was all about greed.

I will be buying a seeded screen for my ATS from Inland Aquatics soon and will be making a trip there to get it and maybe my CUC even though their prices are higher than others. They have a very good reputation and I have heard many good things about their systems. They are a 3 hour drive from me but I think it will be worth the drive just to see their setup.

I will post the results of the vodka dosing for nitrate reduction as it happens.

Any updates? I just bought a 180 this weekend and looking for plumbing ideas.

Good equipment list, perhaps the only critique I have is the return pump. Have you looked at the Eheim return pumps? More expensive, but they come with a 3 year warranty. I believe the Rio pumps only come with 180 day warranty.

Keep us posted with your progress.

No real updates yet. Started dosing vodka a few days ago to reduce 160 nitrates. Been working on aiptasia problem with Joes Juice until I get my water right to add Peppermints to go to town on them. They work best if you starve them so they only have the aiptasia to eat. I have been finding coral remmnents here and there. Some Monti, shrooms, gsp. Trying to get rid of the softies since I won't be having any.

I have had great luck with Rio pumps. I have never had a problem with one so warranty doesn't matter on them with me. I am going to reduce flow through my sump to reduce the micro bubbles in the DT. Will swap out the Rio HF32 with a Magdrive 9.5 and use the big Rio in the DT for some jet stream current action along with my Rio 2500 until I go up to Vortech.

I do actualy have a piece of equipment on my DT that I should chronicle here since most people have never seen one. It was reffered to as a piece of reefkeeping history.

It is an Inland Aquatics ATS250 turf scrubber that is also a surge. Built 10+ years ago and briefly sold until greed and a lawsuit basicaly destroyed the future of these things. The words fuge and refugium were also trademarked then.

It is a dump bucket scrubber and is on the large side. 36"x12"x12". It weighs a lot due to lead weights used to balance the bucket. A nice black acrylic housing with two 55w 6700k PC lamps and a fan in the lid. A Magdrive 3 runs the unit and sits in its own surface skimmer in the DT. Every 30 seconds, 2 gallons of water dumps into the DT creating the surge and exposing the algae covered screen to the air. The motion of the water in the bucket simulates waves on a rocky shore making the algae sway to and fro.

A smaller model, ATS100, was also made but I have yet to see one. I waited 10 years to get my hands on this one and had to repair the acrylic dump bucket that had begun to split open from the lead weights. I just fired this thing up a few weeks ago but haven't seeded the screen with true turf algae yet.

Some pics and videos of it in action.

These are links to some videos of mine in action that are stored online within my own domain that I currently use for storage until I build my website. I am not into videos online so I do not convert them, edit, scale them down in quality or size. They should just open with windows media player. They are what they are. They will take a minute or more to load depending on size and internet connection.
